Convince me not to buy a Motoza tune

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've been wanting both VAG-COM and a stage 1 or 1+ tune for a long time. I don't really see myself doing "mods" with VAG-COM (not interested in independent fogs, etc). I'm much more interested in the code reading/clearing functions and the ability to do logging. It seems, on the surface, at least, as though you get those capabilities as a bonus with the software Motoza provides with even a stage 1 tune.

At the moment, Stage 1+ is off the table, as I don't see myself spending the $300+ on the TT225 injectors right at the moment. (Yes, I know, I'll want it later, but for right NOW, it'll have to wait.)

So I'm looking at $250 + $20 shipping to Ross-Tech for VAG-COM or $350 with shipping included to Motoza for their stage 1 tune and code reading/logging software + USB-->OBD2 interface. Is there some crucial feature of VAG-COM that I'd be missing out on by going with Motoza? Is there a truly good reason to stay stock and get VAG-COM when the price difference is only $80?

Anyway, I'd really appreciate some input from those who have experience with the products in question. Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

    Hmm...correct me if I'm wrong.

May be I'm outdated as I haven't heard from him for a while now but I have been using motoza for my FT4 tune.
The interface sent to me will not open VCDS and is for tuning purposes only. It will not erase/read codes. It is only designed to read/write ecu files and log your car's performance.

    1) So you're assuming that you can keep the interface that Dave sent you to flash your car? I know that I'm gonna have to return mine once we are done tuning my car....
    2) You're planning to use the interface/cable that he will send you like a vag-com to do mods and read/erase codes?? answer is above

Then again, I have the cable that they just released 3-4 months ago so may be Dave already have new cables available to customers?

Dave has the new software and cables going out now. The new software lets you read and erase codes.

How about the other features like Recoding, Output Tests, Adaptation, Basic Settings, etc. VCDS has a lot of features.

The info on the website seems to contradict your experience: http://motozaperformance.com/Software.htm

I wonder if that means that things have changed or that the website is inaccurate...?

Edit: apparently when I get interrupted mid-post, I need to go back and re-read the thread before continuing, as I see this has already been answered...

I guess the question for me is what of that list will I need or benefit from, and what portion of it willthe Motoza software do?

VCDS will not ever be duplicated by Motoza. There is SO much you can do with VCDS its ridiculous. Having said that, I'm not sure what the question is. Is it "Should I get tuned OR get Vag-com?" Is it a one or the other thing?

Also personally, I wouldn't bother with the K2-USB cable. If you ever upgrade your Audi, even to the B7, that cable will not be able to communicate with Can-Bus modules. Its worth it to spend the $100 more and get the Hex-Can+USB cable. The Hex Can also supports dumb transfer mode which allows you to read & flash your ECU (should you ever need to do that), the KII cable doesn't support that IIRC.

I believe, but I'm not certain, that the Ross-Tech Hex-Can cable is probably the same internally as the cable Motoza would send you. With the exception being the motoza cable wouldn't have the Authentication chip that that allows the cable to run VCDS.

Charles, that is exactly the question. I'm not suggesting that VCDS is duplicated by Motoza, but rather that the features I know for sure that I would use are. This has led me to wonder if there are features I'd use that I'd be missing out on by doing the tune instead. If you're telling me that the $350 version of VCDS is the only smart one to buy, then it seems like the financial part of the equation tips even farther in favor of Motoza, as the price is then equal.

If you just want it to pull codes and clear them and do some rudimentary logging (not sure what blocks the motoza software can read, maybe Motoza can clarify on that) I would think the Motoza software woul dbe just fine for that.

If you want to be able to get much more detailed info and log every electronic module in our cars, etc. then VCDS is the only solution really (there are others, just not as easy to use or as thorough).

It sounds like the Motoza tune and software are what you're looking for. The full blown VCDS might be overkill for you.

Its an absolutely killer way to fry your clutch/break your tranny.

No lift is just a mode where the ECU lets the RPMs drop to a specified point when you are at WOT and push the clutch in. Its basically a cheat so you never need to take your foot off the gas like in an Automatic. Total weaksauce.

Yeah I think a lot has been changing pretty quickly. Mine originally only did logging and it was pretty basic. I got an update for their latest software which has a lot more features now, and when I was talking with Dave about that he was saying the whole website is getting redone to promote the new software this month. It doesn't do all the things VCDS does, it is only for interfacing with the ECU and not ABS, etc.. But there are some things it does that VCDS doesn't do either (like Read/Write ECU). The logging is incredibly simple, to take a log I click two things, log ECU, and then record. As opposed to memorizing and typing in nonsensical measuring block values. The data visualization is much better and the UI is sharper, it has graphing, gauges, and simple numeric displays in real time. It also is substantially faster and collects a lot more data than VCDS can on our cars. I get 40 variables simultaneously as opposed to 3 measuring blocks or the 10 individual limit in VagCom.

somebody needs to develop a launch control with anti lag so you can launch with more then 3 psi like in this video here
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhFFJ...eature=related

but the rumor has it that the anti lag between shifts slows you down so if this could be used for just launch control that would be sick

plus there is nothing cooler than shooting a 3 foot flame out of your exhaust

Dave @ Motoza tuned my car on the FT. I can't speak highly enough for this guy. Anytime I have any questions or troubles he emails me back very quickly, he's even given me his cell number to personally talk with him. My car runs flawlessly on his tune and his program is a breeze to use. I can log anytime I want, clear/read any codes I ever get. And from what I understand his upgrade prices are extreamely reasonable.

+1 For Dave, I really can't speak highly enough for him.

    Hi Matt,

Very sorry we missed your inquiry. Please email me directly: [email protected]
We take customer service extremely seriously. A very unfortunate issue has now been resolved. Everyone who did not receive a timely response from [email protected] has received a special promo code and our apologies.

To answer some of the questions on the thread:

-Current features are read/clear fault codes, read ECU, Write ECU, and high speed data acquisition/logging. Our software is currently compatible with Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7.
-Support for some of the more common Adaptations such as throttle body alignment is in the works.
-The Cable itself does support CAN protocol and is forward compatible to even the most modern ECU's. Software support for 2.0T vehicles is in the works as well.
-Upgrade cost is the difference in cost between the tunes, the software and cable are included with all tunes.
-A New website will be launched shortly, and provide clear concise info on our process and capabilities.

Its really cool to see some interest in the new logger, an incredible amount of work went into making it and I hope people really enjoy it. We're continually improving this software and want to keep development alive for the 1.8t platform. If there are features you'd like to see in it let me know.

I talked to Dave. I'm going to purchase the stage one as soon as I get home tonight...if not sooner, hah. He responded immediately to my emails with exactly the info I was looking for. I'm definitely willing to support someone with great customer service who develops these tunes out of passion, not simply for profit. I'll post reviews after I give it a shot.

Now Dave just has to figure out if he wants to pony up for an adv account. IMO, this would be yield a hefty ROI.
