The Abarth Exhaust - Why does it sound so good!?

Every Monday night I see the same white Fiat 500 Abarth, and the guy told me it is 100% stock and he just bought it. Although he looks goofy driving a chick car, the exhaust sounds incredible.

It has a 1.4L turbo engine and dual exhaust that somehow comes out sounding like my 5.9L truck! It is a very deep note with a little bit of turbo spool sound to it.

Basically, how do we get our, in comparison, huge 2.0T's to sound like that? I am thinking I will start with an RAI Downpipe after emissions testing is done. Any other thoughts?

Seriously, you have to hear it. It sounds better than the stock WRX/STI's which I was impressed with.

I found out that Akrapovic (the same company that makes slip-on's) made the exhaust and also makes formula car exhaust along with high end cars like the V10 R8, and the GT3.
I sent them an email, and I am hoping they actually email back with some useful info about mufflers or even more technical.

Oh well good lord, Akrapovic? They are the people that make high end titanium exhaust so I bet the price tag would be ridiculous. Does sound great though.

It is only offered in the 5sp manual which was the biggest downside in my fiancee's eyes since we live in a heavy traffic area.

I saw one in the parking lot at the grocery store. He was driving away and I kindof just stared at it like how does that tiny ass car/engine make such a sweet sweet noise??

Theres really no excuse for the 1.8t or 2.0t to not sound like that, haha.

I agree. I want my 2.0T to sound like that. Does anyone here have straight pipe with a flow-through style muffler. That is what I have on my truck to get that sound. 5" turbo back though.

my stasis exhaust (new revision) wouldn't mate up with my new RAI downpipe, so i drove it home (with just the catless downpipe). that sucker was so damn loud, i even made a pack of harley dudes turn their heads when i revved it in traffic. :P

I think i'm going to have to hack off a section of the stasis downpipe and weld a v-band connector so that i can get it to fit with the RAI downpipe :-/ hopefully it'll sound nice, or else this is going to be a royal pain in the ass.

we drove her 6 speed mini in tallahassee during college and all that is is traffic and hills lol

I find people who don't like to drive manuals in traffic just aren't doing it right, haha.

But really though I actually prefer to drive my 6-Speed in traffic over my Tip just because the Tip mode sucks balls and you can't coast and whatnot. I like having control over what gears I'm in and being able to plan ahead a bit better.

yeah, she can drive a stick but only when I make her. She likes her Jeep Grand Chero which is very fast off the line and shifting. But she is starting to like manuals more and more as times goes on.

I emailed them if it's possible to make one for our cars and how much it would cost. Have not gotten back to me yet but seeing some of the prices like the s4 on there web site going for over 2k i bet it's prob worth the extra cash for it. I mean the AWE quad is up there i would pay the extra couple hundred for my car to sound something like that.

I hate when people sit still revving their engine and think that somehow thats what their exhaust sounds like under load...

That also sounds like a cold start. The one I heard sounded way less raspy and shitty than that. Thats a poor representation of the sound.

I have straight through mufflers on a 3" turbo back...

not sure what the arbarth sounds like compared to my car.. but i do get a few complimens on the exhaust sepite the in cabin noise levels lol

My dad currently drives a 328xi as his city errand car, but because the car is a gas guzzling pig around town, he's thinking about getting the 500 Abarth, which is awesome! I really hope he gives in, and gets one! There pretty sauce bauce, idk what ppl say about them.

No, just less chance for the muffler to cut down on it. I tried my truck with no muffler and it sounded like a jet plane with all the turbo noise, with a flow through muffler it sounds deep with slight turbo noise.

I agree with that too, especially on the higher rpm's but like i said if an abarth muffler, or something similar to it was applied, i feel like you could get a pretty close tone..
