What is the difference between ET35 and ET45 on an 18 X 8 wheel?

    Newbie question, I know.

Also, would the optimal tire size differ between ET35 and ET45 or would the same tire size (245/40/18) work fine with either?

    Thanks

10mm is the difference. The wheel will stick out 10mm further when bolted up to the hub on the et35. That will also give you 10mm more clearance on the inside.

Here is a picture showing what offset is. Numbers are different but a wheels offset is the measurement in mm from the center of the wheel to where the wheel bolts up.

^awesome response. And adding to that, though you have 10mm clearance inside the wheel well, it's 10mm LESS outer clearance (rim of the wheel to fender, as depicted in above)

So it sounds like a ET45 would almost be better? I am not looking for any certain "look". Also, just to be sure, the tire size of 245/40/18 would be fine with ET45's, right?

I use to have wheels that were ET43 w/ 245/40R18 and it was fine, granted the tire was really, really close to the wheel control arm(approx 2-3mm away). ET45 may put you really close, possibly rubbing up against it, which I don't believe is a good thing. Unless you already have the tires then I don't know, but if you could get 235 tires that may be the better choice.

So is the consensus then that for 18 X 8 wheels with ET45, the best tire size would be 235/40?

    Factory 18" wheels on a B8 S4 are 18x8 ET47. ET45 isn't going to rub on a B8 A4.

Thanks, Stereo. Should I run 235/40's instead of 245/40's? I wantto ensure I have ZERO issues with fittment.

    Thanks!

If it was me, I'd run the 245s.

Won't there be more of a possibility of rubbing with 245's v.s. 235's? Is there an advantage to one over the other?

Not unless you're running a really aggressive wheel fitment.

Is there an advantage to one over the other?
245's are more bit more common and there are more tire choices in that size.

    BTW, you're over thinking this.
