Can anyone tell me if these OEM wheels are considered "Hyper Black"???

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am considering a set of new wheels that are "hyper black". However, I do not see anything "black" about them.

They look to be a darker silver/grey similar to my OEM wheels. Can anyone elaborate on the "Hyper Black" finish? I am confused! Here are my current 10 spoke wheels, and then the ones I am considering in Hyper Black.

    Thanks!

Hyper black wheels are not actually black. They look darker (gunmetal/black) when it's darker and more silver in sunlight . Is more on the glossy side though. Google hyper black and you will see exactly what the finish looks like
Modifications: Parents ran out of money so they bought me tires that were way too small for my wheels.

I did that... and I was still confused. :D

Would youy say that both of these wheels are of a similar finish? They look that way to me.

Contact VMR Wheels for some side-to-side pics.
IIRC, HyperBlack is a black see-through finish onto hyper silver.
    Other option is Gunmetal finish.
    Cheers

Thanks, Greg. The gunmetal finish definitely looks much more black and darker to me. I think the Hyper Black looks much more silver in bright lighting, similar to my stock 10 spoke wheels. I'm fine with that as long as they don't look too dark.

those wheels look silver to me, the 2nd one may be gunmetal

here's a pic of hyper black, gunmetal, and hyper silver side by side. the hyper black is like the hyper silver with a tint over it. you can see in that pic its darker than the gunmetal but when in more light it can look lighter than the gunmetal and more silver. but the gunmetal has that shade all the time while the hyper black transitions from the glossy black to gunmetal to silver depending on the light, but mainly closer to the gunmetal shade in most lighting.

    thread bump.

I am looking into refinishing my wheels into a hyper black. I love how they look in pics but people have told me that they are basically black at night which is not what I am looking for. My current setup is too dark for my liking at night and I want something that is lighter.

The gunmetal pictured above is really nice. I always thought a standard gunmetal was matte?

Any comments on hyperblack if you guys have seen them in person would be appreciated!

hyper black is going to be darker than your wheels now. if you don't like your blue ones for disappearing at night, then you definitely need to go brighter, not darker.

In other news, that hyper black is daaaamn sexy.

I have seen some hyper blacks be barely darker than hyper silver, and other than are really dark... it's at the shops discretion to name a finish.. so I think you need to pick a place and see what they can do according to what you want..

i agree, that's the nicest hyper-black i've seen. i've seen some hyper-black look almost like a blackened chrome, which i was not a fan of.

agree with the above. i have been doing my research and it seems like every shop does it a little different. VMR's hyper black is a multilayer process that most say is quite dark, and i am guessing that is what you are referring to.

The process used on the APEX wheels seem simple enough that I can go to a shop and tell them to do. Maybe a gunmetal base coat just to be safe..

Looking for a finish similar to this, maybe a little darker

Feel your pain Calbee, every wheel vendor does Gunmetal/Hyper Black a bit different, sure every powder coat shop does the same.
VMR hyper black rims I've seen here looked sweet - in full sun, silver really shone through, don't recall seeing VMR HyperBlack night picks.
Wondering, how black many layers does VMR do - would fewer layers achieve the look you're looking for?
    Cheers

VMR just states that it is multi layer, So I am guessing that they do a black basecoat then keep doing lighter and lighter shades. Like the link i posted above, I can possibly get a shop to just do a Gunmetal base coat, mist it with a silver on top, and put high luster on it, not sure though.
