I still cant decide what to do with my exhaust on my Avant. I want a better sound than the quiet stock... but dont want it to be obnoxious or have any drone.
Simply delete the two rear mufflers
    or
Swap the first resonator with a Vibrant bottle resonator and replace center resonator with a Magnaflow (and then either leave stock rear mufflers or delete those also)

I have an allroad and I initially wanted to take out the first 3 mufflers, 2 in the back then 1 right after it but keep the resonator in the middle.

Muffler guy took the first 2 rear ones out, skipped the middle and took out the resonator.
    - ran it for about 2 days, way too loud.

I went back and he offered to add a muffler(magnaflow) for free since he made a mistake initially.

It sounds great now. Loud enough to hear in low speeds but no drone, very driveable.

To get what you are after, I would Replace the center Resonator with a Vibrant.... and replace both rear mufflers with magna flow. Leave downpipe resontor alone

B8 Exhaust video and sound clip thread!

    Solid suggestions guys!
Truth be told, no one single setup will satisfy everyone. What 1 person thinks as too loud/too aggressive, another will love it. It’s all about personal preferences.
Sure, it’d be great if the parts were more easily removable and easy to install, then yould be able to try different combinations out til you find what’s best for you.
Mine came about through trial & error. That and deciding after the 1st setup, I wanted to switch fr single to dual. After that it came down to whether or not to full straight pipe off the middle resonator vs adding some rears. So far I’ve been enjoining it!
I’ll try to figure out a decent vid capturing that exhaust note.

I went through (8)..... Freaking Eight full turbo back set ups on my MKVI K04 jetta before Finding one (that even subaru drivers at the time) were giving thumbs up to. But I'll never do that again. I might tweak a cars exhaust 2 times at max now, but I am also on 12 cars later and everyone has been exhausted so I know what I am going for.

Just for hilarious grins from 12 cars ago and 11 years ago

Finally got into the shop to get my New Muffler welded in. Unfortunately, I didnt get any photos...

My finalized setup is CTS HFC>Vibrant 1790>Magnaflow 11236>Y pipe to the Tips.

All stock mufflers have been removed.

Ive changed the exhaust 3 times in 3 weeks. Im still WELL under what an AWE exhasut would cost, and for that, I take the "W". Before the Magnaflow 11236 was installed, I had a MAC muffler that basically amplified the sound of the car, turning it from a 4cyl, to a 69cyl, and i didnt like it. Too loud/crazy drone. The magnaflow 11236 is an amazing change from the MAC. Nice and quiet while cruising around, Once you step on it, It unleashed its growl. PLUS, the "DSG(ZF8)" Farts sound like a Cap gun when you shift. Its intoxicating to say the least.

Ill be making another Video soon of the finalized setup. Thanks poodini for the idea, and to everyone else in here<3

Stoked the switch to the MF turned it around. I was in a similar pickle. Had just changed from single to dual with the setup I have now minus the MF res up front. Too loud and the wife gave me that “the Fu.. is this Shi..?!!” look.
Did some quick research, locked in on the MF race type res and that’s all she wrote!

Glad to have been of assistance. After all, thats what these forums are all about.

Tiggy used a Magnaflow 11236 and I think I've seen other guys use the Magnaflow 11226. What's the difference?
11226 is 2.25 inlet and 2.5 outlet... 11236 is 2.5 for both inlet & outlet?

I think you answered your own question sir! Just take into account what your exiting pipe diameter is.

3in hfc with 3in dp going to oem catback with res and muff delete. Should I have a 3inch cat back made and bolted up to my 3in dp? What will change about the sound and performance?

    Couple things to consider.

    1. Is your DP res or non-res.
    2. Are you single or dual exit.
    3. How do you mean you’ll have a cat back made?

DP is resonated, single exit dual tip, I can have my local exhaust shop weld me a 3 inch straight pipe from my DP all the way back.

Hey I'm looking to go with Poodini's first setup on my B8.5 Audi A5. I'm just curious if I replace the center res and muffler with a MagnaFlow 11236 can I still keep my stock tips if I want to or do the tips have to be changed?

    ^^
Only way to keep your OEM tips are 1) you keep them along with the rear muffler assembly & piping. Or, 2). You pull the tips off the rear muffler and install with a splitter coming directly off the rear exhaust pipe. Depends on what you’re trying to achieve.
Are you running an hfc/testpipe and/or aftermarket downpipe? If you’re thinking to just swap the middle resonator, that should give you a little deeper exhaust note but little else especially if you’re keeping the front and rear res/mufflers intact. I take it you’re simply after the sound vs improved exhaust flow?
Just refer to the diagram. That’ll give you a better sense of where’s what.

Helpful! I'm not too concerned about air flow I'm just trying to get a better sound. I figured if i keep the stock tips it'll save some money (plus I'm not a huge fan of big aftermarket tips). I ordered the magnaflow muffler. What would you recommend? Would adding a splitter to the straight pipe and attaching the tips be fine?

Sorry just a bit of a noob when it comes to exhaust work. Any help will be appreciated

Best advice would be to find yourself a good, local muffler shop. Preferably one that does custom work. Swing by with your new muffler and just have them do a straight swap with your OEM one, leaving the rear muffler/tips intact. Easy! You’ll def notice a difference but it’ll be subtle given you’re keeping everything else stock. If afterwards you want more, then just delete the rear muffler and straight pipe out to where your exhaust exits and weld on the splitter/tips. That’ll def get more people’s attention! Tips you can get relatively cheap so look at some and see what may work for you.

Can a MagnaFlow 11236 replace the OEM muffler? If i remove the center resonator and replace the muffler do you think it'll sound okay?

What’s the best set up if you’re trying to achieve the sound of your turbo whistling through your exhaust without going full straight pipe?

Absolutely. Since that middle resonator is responsible for the bulk of the overall sound, yould prob want to install the MF there. Are you keeping the OE res up front?

That would be sweet! A more cost effective alternative to an aftermarket catback for sure. Provided of course you get it used.

And then I'll record and post a video after I add a non-resonated CTS downpipe.

Let me know if you replace the center res with the mf 11236, I was thinking about doing that and keeping the rear oem muffler until I replace the entire exhaust

That’s a good place to start.

Are either of you two running an HFC/Test pipe as well as a downpipe? It’d be good to know what each car has on board in terms of engine/intake/exhaust mods to have a better sense of what you’re trying to do.

Are either of you two running an HFC/Test pipe as well as a downpipe? It’d be good to know what each car has on board in terms of engine/intake/exhaust mods to have a better sense of what you’re trying to do.

My exhaust is completely stock right now. I have an ecs intake and turbo muffler delete but completely stock other than those. Looking for a deeper sound but not obnoxious

Well, swapping out the middle resonator would be a good place to start. You’ll notice a nice, deeper exhaust note but since everything else stayin’ stock, it won’t have that guttural snarl. Still, I think you did it and should still be loud enough to make yourself known out there!

I thought I was done messing with my exhaust and now after going over these last posts I’m thinking I’m gonna go quad and add a resonator upfront just not sure if I’ll keep the mf 11236 in the middle or swap for something else

B8 Exhaust video and sound clip thread!

    ^^
Bro, last check I thought you were all good no?. Are you singe or dual exit?

As far as swapping out the middle res, short of a glass pack or straight-piping that section, I’d just leave as is. Are you running straight pipe off the MF or do you have a muffler back there
Remind me again your current setup..
