Power Steering Noise when turning while idling. VIDEO for sound.

So my power steering pump decided to give out about 2-3 months ago and I got a new one off of ECS. I'm wondering if it's supposed to make this whistling sound if I'm turning the wheel while idling at a stand still?

I have that same noise sometimes on my b6, it usually only happens when its cold though. It's not my fluid or anything so its probably my pump or the hoses being clogged up :/ but it barely ever happens though so i'm not too worried about it at the moment. My mech says its most likely the hoses though and especially since you replaced your pump

I just watched your vid and that's EXACTLY what I'm hearing and experiencing now. I believe my power steering rack may be shot. I checked my power steering fluid level and it appears to be fine but noticed a whining noise when I turn the wheel all the way to the left and right. Apparently, the wrong type of power steering fluid was put in a couple of years ago by the other owner. It was flushed and replaced with Audi PS fluid along with a brand new PS pump as well but the noise still persists so I'm not sure if the the steering rack is toast or the pump...maybe both?? Anyway, did you ever figure out what the issue was?

That noise is not from the pump. I believe it to be the rack. Sorry for the bad news. It's probably fine to drive for a long time though.
Do it right, or don't bother.

Racks do not make noise when they go bad... they leak from the output seals, its just a simple hydraulic system.

Its your pump but its pretty normal, when you turn the wheels at a stand still, the steering system is at its maximum pressure. This plus the engine being at idle causes the pump to be overworked. The squeal that you hear is an increased radial load on the pumps internal bearings from it being overworked. The squeal can also come from improper lubrication of the pump do to low fluid. So check your fluid, but if you rev up the engine while turning the wheel I would expect the noise to decrease if not disappear.

this is true, i have the same problem, it is also worse if you sre slightly facing uphill when turning the wheel..
apparantly the power steering hoses have baffling in them and if not replaced with the factory hoses the pressure flowing through the hoses will contribute to the noise as well.. as long as you are not losing fluid it will be fine to drive but if the noise bothers you as it does me just put a few revs on the engine while turning..

This happened on my old 00 S4 and happens on my 01 S4 -exact- same noise. I went to a B5 S4 meet a couple days ago and when everyone left I heard about three make the same noise.. it's normal (but annoying none the less)

yep, mine made this noise too.. i replaced the RACK, and the noise is no longer there, the noise can be caused by either the pump, failed rack, air in system or some combination thereof

i talked to shop i take it to who specialize in these cars and they said that it's completely normal for a 10 year old b5 with xxx amount of mileage. so that alleviated my concerns.

Mine makes the same noise. I'm not worried about it. It's one of the few things I'm not worried about on my car
