    AC compressor change

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The AC compressor on 2001 Allroad whines (still working though, but annoying). I want to change the compressor.
Obviously, the AC system needs to be filled/charged again.

What is involved to get the compressor off and back on?
Anything to be removed (currently have front in 'park position' and front of car on high jacks).

Can someone point me at a good write up for DIY?
01 Allroad Tiptronic, TCU tune, mild stg 3 (350 HP) tune (stock injectors) KraftwerkTurbo TM1. Lower, Wider. Custom tip vent pod with Podi
02 Allroad 6 spd, Kraftwerk Turbo TM6, 750cc, 3" MAF, piggy, FMIC, CM stg 5 (hate). 30 psi at 3600 rpm. Needs stronger rods (coming).

If you have a 2.7 or 4.2 with belt drive then you just remove the three retaining bolts (13mm) after removing belt tension and install in reverse order.
If you have a spline drive then let me know and I can get you info, kinda busy at work now.
    Good luck!

    2.7T allroad.

Just not sure if 'clutch' or 'no clutch' (no clutch seems to use N280 compressor regulator valve).
Any suggestions how to determine which compressor I have and need to get as replacement?
Where is N280 located (Bentley not showing anything; also referring to Evaporator Vent Temperature Sensor -G263- which only seems be be used with non clutch compressor; location?

The N280 valve is made into the back of the compressor (two pin connector) and no connector for the "clutch" as the N280 controls the internal swash plate for displacement so you don't have a "clutch". If you have a compressor without a N280 then you'll have a two pin connector that attaches to the actual clutch.
I was referring to a belt driven compressor or a shaft driven compressor (on some 4.2's) as far as removal. You have a conventional belt driven that only requires the three bolts for removal.

Seems like the oil filter at the very least has to be removed as well?

It's been a while since I've done one but I forgot about the filter being there. Once you disconnect the a/c lines (T45 Torx) from the compressor you should be able to slide it forward towards the lock carrier and take it out since you have it in service position. If not, remove the filter and oil filter cooler (deep 27mm socket for the retaining nut) to remove it. Make sure you hold the cooler as you loosen it so you don't tear the sealing o-ring behind it. Shoot me your VIN and I can give you a definite answer as long as I can load Elsaweb from the house.

Audi_Tech: thanks for the tips. I got it out (but took the sway bar down and removed the motor mount to get to the one T45 that was already a bit rounded).
2 wires going into the front, so its a clutch type, right?

I assume the whining noise come from a bearing. Would like to take the clutch off, see if the remaining still feels 'rough'.
Maybe just the clutch bearing is making the noise?
Noise changes with A/C on (noise) to off (no noise).

Only see one nut on the clutch in the front. Remove and clutch comes off?

That is a clutch type compressor, to be honest I've never take a clutch off one as the compressor/clutch assembly is cheaper than just the clutch if I remember correctly...seems odd I know! If it's a bearing noise it could be the compressor or the clutch. Wish you were close to me, you could get my price on a compressor! Let me know if you need any other help. Cheers!

Took the clutch off. The bearing is running rough.
Is it available itself (part number/name, source)?
Or is the pulley including the bearing available?

New clutch should come with the bearing installed.
Shoot me your VIN and I can check in ETKA at some point tomorrow if I get a chance, didn't see the clutch separate and Adv Auto.

    From a Mercedes forum:

    My bearing is a Koyo part# DAC355222RR9D, it measured 35mm x 52mm x 22mm. That size is commercially available.
