Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Recently replaced the torn CV boot on my driver side. I thought that would fix the issue however during highway driving the car tend the shake a lot but if I'm local driving I have no issues. Any idea what it could be?

Does it shake during braking or all the time?

If during braking it is a rotor problem. You could try to rebed them.

If it shakes all the time it is a balance issue. I had a bad shake because at some point a tire was very low on air and was driven that way(by mechanic) and that cause the rubber inside to shed. At highway speeds the rubber would go and wobble intensely. I had the tire remounted and that got rid of the horrible wobble. Fix-a-flat can also do that.

It has fresh rotors and pads and the shaking is coming from the driver side and not from the passenger.

It doesn't shake all the time only when I'm break on the highway if I'm at low speeds city driving there isn't a problem.

Tires are new and were balanced.

Based on that do you guys still think it could be the rotors/pads?

Not always true. Often times people mistake brake dust deposits as 'warped' The brake dust can build up in certain places on the rotor more than others, thus giving it the 'warped' feel. OP, could be something with your steering rack.

..also check to make sure your wheels are balanced properly.

i too have this problem. i have the stoptech bbk with two piece rotors and i get violent shaking when i'm braking at high speeds down to about 30mph. regular city driving has practically no issues. also seems to get worse the warmer the brakes get.

Might take a quick look to rule them out. The rubber bushings dont last long if not tightened at ride height.

I had some strong vibrations at around 40mph. Drove me crazy...I ended up changing the pads to ceramics and bedding them. I then happened to notice that one of my brake hoses had a strong kink in it. Seemed that previous owner replaced the passenger side one with a steel braided one and it developed a kink to the point where it looked like it was going to pop. By hand it flexed a lot at that point. So I replaced that hose with a stock rubber one and my vibrations are now dramatically reduced.

I can't say for sure it is from the hose since I also rebedded and am using different pads but a vibrating hose may be a source of vibrations?

Get your rotors checked if they aren't warped or improperly machined from new.

hey man - I doubt this is a brake problem - I currently have a vibration coming from my passenger side, and it is actually a bad tie rod. But, I have noticed a slight clunk noise coming from that side when I go over small bumps at slow speed (and no, its not an engine mount or anything, I checked) - it is definitely the tie rod. Do you have any slight clunking noises coming from your drivers side? When I drive around town, the car is fine, but i noticed that it will start to shake a little at higher speeds (highway).

I'm still putting my money on a warped rotor even though you said they're new. It's possible you got one that still needs turned from the factory. I'd check the rotors before you go spending any money on buying other parts.

my money's on a bad tie rod. jack the car up on that side with the wheel on and try to shake the wheel left to right (quick shakes) if its any of your suspension ball joints you should be able to feel it sort of pop back and forth.

Bed in your new rotors and pads properly and it will go away.

Usually when you experience vibrations while applying the brakes it's from inconsistencies of pad material built up across the face of the rotor. This in turn creates a pulsating sensation in the steering wheel and brake pedal. This is often referred to as a "warped" rotor. The rotor isn't really warped it just needs to be turned and re-bedded.

Usually you can have rotors turned for about less than $20 a rotor.

This x1000. So many people think rotors are warped when it's just uneven pad deposits. It's very, very difficult to warp a rotor.

He mentions fresh rotors, so check to see if they were improperly machined from the get go. While you've got the wheel off might as well check all the suspension components for play or wear.
