    Plastidip: DIY/Questions/Ideas/Projects

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
There has been too many threads relating to plastidip. It would be easier to have one consolidated thread related to plastidip.

    Q+A:

    Q: What is plastidip?
A: Plastidip is a flexible, rubberized coating that can be used on virtually anything. Basically, if you can paint it, you can plasti dip it!

Q: Where can i buy plastidip?
A: You can buy plastidip at your local lowes or homedepot. You can also order it online @ http://www.dipyourcar.com/ and yes, they ship to canada!

    Q: What colors are available?
A: Most common colors you can pick up in a store is yellow and black. However if you decide to order online, you can also find white, red, grey, etc.

    Q: Is plastidip permanent?
A: NO! plasti dip is completely removeable. Some spots will be harder than others, but it can be done!

Q: I'm planning to dip my front grill of my gorgeous S5, will it hold up against rock chips?
A: When i had my S5, my grill was plastidipped for about 8 months. Never had a chip in it, and it held up very well.

Q: If i wash my car with plastidip on it, will it ruin it?
A: Nope! Just dont use any microfiber or linty towels on it, or else it will pull out some of the fibers and your grill will get "hairy".

Q: How many cans do i need to plastidip my grill?
A: I used about 2 1/2 cans. Remember, thicker coats the better!

    DIY Grill

requires: 3 cans, Lots of newspapers handy, Masking tape

One of the most common projects people use plasti dip for is the grill. Here is a short tutorial:

Pre tasks: CLEAN YOUR GRILL !!! WATER AND SOAP IS SUFFICIENT
    1) If you havent already, take off the front plate holder
    2) Pop open the hood. Remove the plastic cover on top of the radiator grill. should be held on by a few clips.
    3) Drop a newspaper behind the grill and tape it somewhere so it doesnt fly away. Close the hood
    4) Start prepping the newspapers around your grill. its ok to leave some spots exposed because you can always rip off the plastidip if you over spray. Remember: the heavier the coats, the easier it is to remove
    5) Stand about 6 inches away from the grill and start spraying. Results should look something like this:

    5) Keep spraying, give yourself about 10 minutes between coats. dont overspray on certains spots or else it would get heavy and blotch up.
    6) When you are statisfied with the results when its dry, you can start ripping the peices you dont want plastidip. For me, i used an exacto knife and traced over the 4 rings and peeled it off. Also peeled off the S5 emblem. Should look like this:

    7) when all is said and done, these are the results:

and a few months later it still looks as good as new

    8) Now you can go back and spray the front plate holder :)

    DIY Fog light surround

Few months after i plastidipped my grill, i also decided to do the chrome surround on the fog light grill

Requires: 1 can of plastidip, some newspapers, masking tape

    1) Pull out the fog light grill ( be careful if you pull out too hard, the clips might break off )
    2) Clean the grill with water and soap to get any dirt off
    3) Start masking off the grill, should look like this when done:

    4) Start spraying 6 inches apart. About 3-10 coats should be fine
    5) should look like this when done

    6) As you can see, i plastidipped some of the black parts as well. it didnt bother me. if you dont like it, use an exacto knife and trace around it and peel it off.
    7) replace the grill. and RESULTS

Hope this clears up some plastidip questions you may have. If you guys have any questions at all, please feel free to ask. Also if you have any ideas on new projects, any pics you want to share, please post them on this thread!!!

I ordered some "metalizer" to lighten them up a bit so they are not so dark. Hopefully that gives them a more gunmetal look than black.

I peeled the center caps after I finished, I like the contrast that it provides. I might do those flat black when I get my metalizer though.

Added some metalizer on top of the anthracite and I think it looks much better! It really does look like metal and lightens them up. Hard to tell in the pics but when the sun hits them it gives the metal flakes a nice shine. Great stuff.

I am very happy with them, the metalizer has a very realistic finish and looks much better than darker wheels because you can see the spokes better. Just lay the anthracite right on top of the black and grab a can of metalizer if you want to lighten them more.

On the car, it's very easy. Put some tire shine on your sidewalls, make sure none of it gets on the wheel itself. Then thread a bag through the spokes to mask your brakes. After a few coats roll the car forward a bit to ensure even coverage. The car should be ready to drive probably 30 min after the last coat, you can then just peel off the overspray on your tires. Just don't wash the wheels until after a week to give it time to cure.

I understand not to use a microfiber cloth to hand wash the car but I was wondering if it would be safe to use a hand wash mitt to clean and The Absorber to dry off the car?

The biggest fear is for The Absorber since its awfully grippy even just on the normal paint

After a few coats roll the car forward a bit to ensure even coverage. The car should be ready to drive probably 30 min after the last coat, you can then just peel off the overspray on your tires. Just don't wash the wheels until after a week to give it time to cure.
Hey there, late response haha but when you sprayed your wheels on the car, didn't the pdip get on the walls behind the spokes too? and if you wanted to get that sprayed for an even look, could you please share how you did those back walls? thanks

I kinda like it; nice work VR4-S4! There's so many options for pdip out there now, it's hard to pick one. Leaning towards an anthracite for my black B9 A4
