Lightbulb Checking your heated steering wheel

Heated steering wheel was part of Cold-weather package in 2.8/2.7/3.0 and in Premium Package in 4.2, and it was installed into 4-spoke steering wheel but not all years had them so it is hard to find out if you car came with this option or not, if you have original bill of sale of the car you can verify if this option was listed (I had original bill and the heated steering wheel was listed) second option is to remove the airbag and check if there is extra wiring , below it shows where the heating element is located and how to test it if it doesn't function anymore.

Heated steering wheel is connected to front seat switch, so everytime you select to heat your bottom it heats your hands too, but usually after few years it stops working, if you were lucky and under warranty you got free replacement, mine failed after warranty expired .

Before you remove airbag you need to disconnect negative battery , otherwise error will record in Airbag module and you won't be able to delete the code.
Tools that you will need is

    • T25 Hex key
    • Digital Multimeter

I have removed my steering wheel, but you don't have to , the test can be done without removing of steering wheel

Using T25 insert into the back of the steering wheel and carefully unbolt the screw, do not rush take your time, it is very easy to strip this bolt .
and do the same on the other side of the wheel,

Location of the porthole where you insert the hex key

While turning your t25 hex key you will notice your airbag separating from the wheel , just hold it so doesn't fell out,
once you reach a point when your tool turns without resistance then you can separate the airbag from wheel do not pull it out completely, there is wire attached to, do it slowly, there is a yellow plug connected to airbag, disconnect it and put your airbag in safe area,

the heating element l is located in the bottom of the steering wheel, if you don't have this then you do not have heated steering wheel

In order to verify if the coil is bad you need to disconnect the 4 pin white plug, press the tab and pull it out
the two black wires are your heating element coil and the bottom thin gray wires are your temp verification coil

now using digital multimeter set to 2000 ohmmeters, you can verify if the probes work
without touching two probes the reading will be 1 on the display

once two probes are connected it shows zero on digital display means the flow of current between probes

Now the the next step is to insert probes into the 4 pin white plug
Insert each probe into each plug I started with thin two gray wires first and I checked the multimeter and it shows the flow of current through entire wheel it will read 15-25

next insert probes into two black wires on 4 pin of white plug, and check the display and I had no reading,
one of my friends checked his heated steering wheel since it was working and he did the test for me just to check if this in deed works and it was working it was showing positive reading

heating element of the coil is burned out somewhere in the steering wheel, and you can't repair that, the wheel needs to be replaced
if in case you get good reading on both wires then possibly this little board is bad,

I have tested this board applied 12v to the two pins and it was working .. but in most cases the coil inside the wheel is burned out

OP, Forgive the half-assed thread jack....does anyone know if all Allroads after 2001 came with the same harness even without the heated wheel? I know the 4.2's did so I'm hoping to add a heated wheel to my '03 2.7T....Maybe just coding with Vag-Com is needed and a patch wire from the steering column to some connector somewhere? Would installing a 4.2 steering column work (then there's the electrics for telescopics)...

I got spoiled having the heated steering wheel in my '01!

I'll back out of the thread from here if my post needs to be addressed elsewhere, MOD, please advise.....

    Thanks!

    *Revisiting this*
Now have an '05 6MT that "needs" a heated steering wheel. Is the steering column harness modular enough to add to the body harness and code in the wheel ? Probably way more involved but worth asking the question. I'd think it only dependent on the seat heat-on signal as with it's own little circuit board it must be fairly autonomous...?

I do have a heated 4-spoke wheel in my spares.

You need a steering wheel with the heated element and canceling ring for heated steering wheel that is between the steering wheel and column and wiring to the heat seat switch and power , ground etc..

Damn, the canceling ring! Have to get to a spares yard somewhere to find what I don't have.
    Thanks
