    Wah's Audi A5 Build Thread

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've done a build thread(s) over on a5oc a while back and seeing that mop and ecrew have done one here post-modding their beauties, I thought why not as well.
I wasn't sure about the name "build thread", was thinking of calling it "built thread" since I've done about 85 - 90% of the intended mods. I do however still have more plans and ideas for her so it what it is.
    On to the good stuff....

First day I picked her up...

    Talk about wheel gap.
She was still a beauty and it felt wonderful seeing her in person for the first time. I introduced myself as did she, and as they say, the rest is history

My first plans were to get a turbo-back exhaust and intake, and since there were no aftermarket options at that time I decided to go the custom route; picked up a Magnaflow HFC to replace the stock one as well.

I ended up regretting my decision as the people I had worked with were dirty.
Wasn't happy with the sound of the exhaust, the looks, or the fools I had worked with so I decided to change things up a little when I invested in some Magnaflow rear mufflers with quad tips. Before I did so, I needed to make sure I had the right valance. I was in love with the aggressiveness of the sline valance so I didn't want to stray away from that. Ended up making a fiber glass replica of the valance with cut-outs on both sides to accommodate quads, painted body color - the result was excellent! Not 100% but very, very good.

At the time I had ordered an S5 grill. I had also painted the grill black; front splitter and side mirrors the color of my Y-spokes, which came out fantastic.
Also, invested in 20/25 spacers and the rieger roof spoiler which I know is a hate or love it thing but I really do think it adds a great touch to the rear.

Installed the HOEN xenon fog light bulbs which I thought, and still think, make a big difference side-by-side.

AWE had come out with their FMIC and also sold H&R F/R anti-sway bars so I picked those up as well. Took the car to Audi and had everything installed. I remember the drive on the way to a friends pool party because we came across this corridor of trees which looked sick. Yeah, I snapped a few pics...

With the addition of the H&R sways, the body roll was minimized but not drastically. I was still riding on the standard suspension so you can imagine the body roll, but it was very comfortable.

A couple of weeks after I had installed the FMIC, I knew I wanted more power so it was time for a tune. Looked around, researched, etc... but ended up going with a tune from Audi. Audi would warranty this and I would have that peace of mind. It was a Piasini tune.
I've had it for over 2 years now and I haven't had trouble, even though I do plan on switching to something else.

I happened to make a before video from 0 - 200 km/h as well as a post-tune vid to actually see the difference. No launch control, no magic shifting, just press on the pedal and go.

    Before
    After

I managed to knock off ~9 seconds which in the world of physics, distance & time, and the automotive industry is very good and will put about 50+ car lengths between the two cars. Thoughts?

About a month later, I ordered the AWE boost gauge for safety as well as curiosity reasons. It had a very OEM-like look to it which I liked.

They were painted using the exact same paint code as the Y-spokes. I personally like them better than the alu S5 mirrors because depending on the lighting they can go from looking bright to looking like a dark, dark matt silver color as you will tell from the below pics.

One of the best mods I have done was the flat bottom steering wheel thanks to Alex, a unique RS6 steering wheel with silver stitching and alu paddles. Absolutely love it!
I had also installed RS5 pedals as well as the Stronic shift knob which is also a fantastic mod.

Gave the interior a WHOLE different feel and look to it.

Winter was around the corner and it had already started snowing so decided to drive up to the mountains for the weekend and introduce her to the snow.

At night everything froze over so it was like an ice skating rink. Now, would you sit at home or feel the urge to get out and test the Quattro system in your relatively new Audi A5?
I personally have no comment ...

Ski slopes were in the process of opening up gradually so I slapped on an Audi ski rack; considering I'm the biggest ski fan EVER.

Its a love it or despise it thing. I've had friends tell me that it looks more aggressive with it, and I've had a few say to me "take it off, its horrible". I liked it so I left it until the winter was over

Purchased the APR/Carbonio intake with 034's hose. As mentioned previously, fitment was not great and the hose needed some trimming, or so it seemed.
I didn't really notice a huge change in throttle response or noise since I already had the custom intake. However, moving to a more OEM, better-built intake was my my main goal.

Winter was slowly disappearing and the beautiful summer was right around the corner.
What better way to start the summer with some tints, 55% to be exact.

Ah man, did it look good! Didn't want to go with something too dark so went with a very light shade. I think it added that little touch I was after without going overboard. It definitely pronounced the presence of the chrome window trim.

It was time for some performance/handling mods and what better way to fulfill that than with some bad-ass coilovers. I didn't want to spend the money on some KW V1s since I dont track the car (unfortunately) and I definitely didn't want to get some springs because the roads here aren't great as you've probably read lol.

The day was saved by Glen who offered a very, very good coilover for half the price - hence, the STs were born.
It is the same exact coilover as the V1s except these were not the inox-line, rather the basic. Winters over here are not harsh nor do they last long so I thought this was the perfect set-up. And it was! I've had the coilovers on for a little over a year now with no problems so far (knock on wood).

This was the very first pic I took right after I lowered it that same day.

These were my first set of coilovers so I wasn't sure what to expect of the kit or the handling and looks of the car - WOW is what I had to say!
It is f****** crazy how lowering a vehicle changes the looks. OMG! The car just looked so good sitting there.

    The handling was phenomenal.
It was planted; and looks sexy doing it too

I was very, very fond if not blown away with the aesthetics of a lowered car; I couldn't believe I hadn't lowered my previous A6. What a difference!
Even my girlfriend appreciated the difference in handling and overall looks. It was just phenomenal!

I let her settle for a week or so, then raised it up a little because let's face it I was literally bottoming out on EVERYTHING lol
Had it raised, alignment was done and I was back on the roads happier than ever.

I just loved the look of her a** with those wheels sticking out and the sline valance mesh grill visible under the setting sun.

The magnaflow HFC which I had initially purchased seems like it was falling apart and was extremely inferior to EuroCode's HFC so the mod bug bit.

Also purchased some interior and license plate LEDs which were a pretty cool upgrade considering the price I had paid and the outcome.
Installed the HFC, drove around for a couple of weeks, and by that time I was eagerly curious to get her on a dyno.

All was great but I was interested to how much power I was putting down considering I've raced against some decently fast cars and pulled on them.
After almost giving up hope, I found out through a friend of mine that a there was a dyno about 15 min from where I live. (My friend was trying to get his Evo10 to 400 awhp; at that point he was hitting about 375 )

Gave them a visit and put her on those rollers.

    Click me

    She measured 252 awhp and 321 ft-lbs.

We were pretty surprised with those power figures but went on about our way; we didn't want to put too much emphasis on those numbers or try and compare them with other dyno charts since many, many factors come into play. So it is what it is when you don't have the delta.

Absolutely gorgeous ride! How low do you currently have your coil overs set? Any camber issues or uneven tire wear???

Thanks mate. I've never measured the height of the ride from the ground but I may do that if encouraged nicely .
Right now, I have about half a finger width in the rears and about 3/4 - 1 finger width in the fronts.

I definitely have negative camber in the fronts; the rears are within OEM specs but the fronts aren't. I plan on getting some UPCs very soon. I'm traveling to the US in June so I'm thinking I ship them there and then bring them back with me - this way I save on shipping and customs charges.

Awesome car Wah, always interesting to seeing your updates! I love your custom valence! I always wanted to do this to my rear and was hoping Socrates from A5oc could pull off the group buy for it but that fell through. Im sure you were asked many times already but how did you get it done? Did you add another output to an existing 2.0t S line valence or is the whole thing custom? also are those 90mm tips?

Wah, are you serious about getting the UCAs? I just got my car aligned today and my fronts are out of spec. I have -2.36 on the left and -1.67 on the right. I am thinking of getting the Black Forest Industries one. Maybe we go in together we can get a little bit of a discount?

awesome build thread Wah. how did you make your custom rear valence? i love the s-line one also, but it is only offered in either dual tip on one side or dual exit (no option for quad tip) for the A4.

there is a certain company on here that we all know and love that will be releasing their own UCA kit. i say wait and dont get the BFI ones..

    Thanks. Appreciate the appreciation
I remember his thread on a5oc and unfortunately for the community it went sour.
The valance is a fiber glass replica of the OEM valance with a cut-out on the right. We used the original to mask the initial OEM shape and then proceeded to imitate a same cut-out on the right.
I have been asked a few times if I would be willing to make a few and sell them but I figured it would cost a lot considering I'm in Lebanon and shipping would be extremely high.

    No doubt.
Your front camber specs are definitely out of OEM range but aren't as bad as mine lol my fronts are at -3.18 and -2.28 . Aesthetically it isn't pleasing either.
I was thinking of going with BFI and would love a discount but Tofu mentioned a new kit coming out so

Spill the beans??? Also I wonder if its worth the wait? What can this mystery company do that is different from BFI? If its truly an innovative/better product I will wait but can't wait forever. Do you know the timeframe?

WAH- noticed you previously had listed the AWE DV installed on your car, but now it's just the FMIC and gauge. But did you remove the DV? We're there issues with it?

With the Carbonio intake and turbo spool making whistling noises up front, the DV is adding more noises which is beginning to annoy somedays...I'm not even sure of any performance benefit of having it there besides the noise.

Opinions are like a-holes, everyones got one.... and everyone thinks everyone else's stink!
So the above post was my uneducated, misinformed, unresearched, ignorant, xenophoc, homophobic, sexist, agnostic, cacomorphobic, flaming, stinky opinion..

I did but took it off for the same reason you get annoyed somedays. It didn't really do a better job than the OEM one and the noise was beginning to feel a little ricer-like so it was a no brainer.

Eurocode had released their TruFit silicone hose and since my 034 hose was trimmed down to the bone, decided to purchase to get a more snug fit.

I had a little trouble installing the hose at first but after much practice, removing and re-installing, I finally got it to sit properly. Its been on for over 3 months now and has not moved at all.

Again, I did not feel a major benefit since I already had the 034 hose but EC's hose is a nicer product.
