    Deformed Oil Filter

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
When I change the oil on my 2.0T, the filter looks like it's had the life sucked out of it. It's quite deformed and not the same shape as when it was fitted. Is this normal?

I'll try to post a picture later...

Mobil 1 Extended Performance... it seems I have 2 different kinds. I suspect the odd one out is an OEM filter and that looks a bit battered too...

None of those are from the dealer. I've seen aftermarket ones do that a lot. I'd go with Genuine Audi or MANN. Only time I've ever seen them do that is after being left in for 15k or longer. But to answer your question it is not normal

It looks like the filter is too long and gets crushed a little when tightening the filter housing. They don't look compromised but I wouldn't take a chance on this. Go buy the OEM filter and install it. Then remove it to see if it's deformed. If not use the OEM filters and don't worry about this again. If it's crushed you have another problem to deal with.

I changed my oil about 1,000 miles ago and I had the Mobil 1 filter in there and it looked the same as yours. I switched over to the more expensive Bosch filter.

Looks like they are too "tall" and are being crushed when the cannister is tightened down. I've always run the OEM filters, never had a problem.

Had a friends mobile one filter do this. It even gave him a low oil pressure light after about 400 miles. He switched to oem and hasnt had a problem. Reason being is you can get a deal for around $35 for oil and filter at your local auto store. But the mobile filter is just garbage.

I just changed my oil at 90k miles, my Mobil 1 filter looked like that. They never did previously. I'm thinking it happened when I unscrewed the filter housing. Eventually ill be getting the aluminium one from ECS or Europarts

Use OEM filters only. Although Mobil advertises it fits our cars, I bet it's a bit longer than OEM size, which makes the filter to squeeze inside the filter housing.

The filter I pulled out of my b7 a few weeks back looked totally normal. I assume it was OEM, but I didn't install it so I dont know. You guys are making me nervous about the crappy FRAM filter I put in (shut up, its just what I had at the time!). Good thing I'm changing the oil again this weekend since I just replaced the cam a week after I did the oil change a month ago. Got a stash of OEM filters to toss in.

doesn;t look crushed, it looks twisted, can;t be sure because i don't live inside an oil filter, but i would imagine givin the twisty nature of the filters, that it looks like this happens when you unscrew the housing, combined with the fact that oil has been soaking the filter for 4-6 months paper tends to get soggy and easily manipulated.

if it was crushed it would look more wavy and not all in unison

    Re: Deformed Oil Filter

Always use Mann or OEM. My used filters never look crushed or twisted. Probably due to certain other brands being slightly longer and after soaking in oil, being twisted upon removal of housing as pointed out above.

Unless they look like they've fallen apart or completely deteriorated, I can't see why it would matter though.

It's not normal to have deformed oil filter. Try to use OE VAG or OEM Hengst filters. I only use HQ Hengst filters.

The filter on the right it looks like a Hengst filter

So I have gone through 3 Mann oil filters in three months. I'm running stage 3 with gt2871r and Im being told that my turbo is causing my oil filters to be sucked in and crushed causing the oil pressure light to come on. Is this true? In the 3rd post in the photo My Mann oil filter looks just like the middle mobile one filter or worse.

Well I've been using mobile one and Mann and it stinks up causing low oil pressure sensor. This will start a month after I change the filter so I have to change the, every two or three months to just be safe. I will try the hengst filter and will post results

I had a similar situation with a Bosch filter. replaced it with a Mobil 1 but now I'm not expecting better results. bought an OEM the other day.
But I wouldn't say its from being too long, it looks like the middle got sucked in, no other twisting or squishing. and I change my oil every 3k if not sooner.

I was having this problem with the Mobil 1 filters and ever since I switched to the Bosch Filter my filter has yet to come out thrashed and crushed looking and or twisted. This tells me it's not the car but something to do with the filters. Just changed my oil on Saturday and I was running the Bosch filter and it came out looking mint (minus the black and dirty part)

I just pulled a K&N PS-7010 Oil Filter from my car after 5,000 miles and it was deformed into the shape of a corset. Something like eyesolution's photo above. Not nearly as bad as those horror photos of the other Mobil 1's!

I wish we could get some controlled testing of oil flow and filtration efficiency with these various filters. I'm willing to bet Mobil 1 wouldn't score so well; still, people buy their products en masse thanks to the marketing. I likely won't buy the K&N filter again. I want to get my oil change interval up to 9,000 miles but I don't like the idea of a massively deformed filter being in there for so many miles. I wish I had taken note of what I pulled from my car after the last dealership oil change. It was in excellent condition after 5,000 miles. I'm going to use a Mann for my next service.

Did another change yesterday and the Mobil1 filter had the worst deformation I've seen yet. Definitely not crushed or twisted as I fully fitted and removed the new filter to check. I've written to Mobil1 to ask them what the deal is. Either the structural rigidity of the product is insufficient from the get-go or, as the filter pours block over time the filter is simply crushed by the increasing hydraulic pressure differential.

There is no rupture of the element that can be seen and the seals at either end maintain the barrier. I'm less worried about oil bypassing the filter and more worried about the risk of oil starvation... but then, like most cars, I assume that these engines have an oil filter pressure relief valve to bypass the filter?

I'm gonna check this one in 5,000 miles and see if that make s a difference. I've read threads on other forums that suggest this only happens between 5,000 and 10,000 miles. Odd really as Mobil states they are good up to 15,000.

I'll let you know what kind of reply I get from Mobil... if any.
