    Hyper Silver wheel paint

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have been running a set of RS6 reps in Hyper silver for several years. The finish is starting to show a little age and I would like to refinish them without having to deal with de-mounting the tires and powder coating to get a Hyper Silver color. I am not at all adverse to rattle can spraying the wheels if I can find the right paint.

Has anyone stumbled across a Silver that is either in a rattle can or spray gun that is close to Hyper Silver? Everything I can find requires de-mounting the tires and applying a powder coat and baked top coat. I only have $350 in the wheels to begin with so that much work really isn’t an option.

Right now I’m leaning toward the Wurth or 1Z Einszett wheel restoration kit Clicky click but it really isn’t as bright as I would prefer.

Anything else available that you may know about?

    not sure of what matches.

I rattle canned wheels on one of my old cars in silver. See if this color matches

The paint is Duplicolor wheel paint: http://www.duplicolor.com/products/wheelCoating/

And here is what the color turned out like:

Thanks for the pic. Wheels look nice! I considered the Dupli-Color silver and that is still an option but it isn't as bright as the Hyper silver. I'm beginning to think it will not be possible without a multiple coat process.

Subscribed! Will be planning to do this too!

And if it helps, I read somewhere before that hyper silver is the end product of powdercoating the wheel gloss black at first then coating it with a metallic bright silver.

It may sound dumb but thats what I read somewhere when I was looking for a touch up paint for my hyper silver v708s

I read something on a VW forum a while ago that involved mixing some of the fake chrome paint with a silver metallic and spraying it on with a little gun. But I've never heard of anyone getting the hyper silver paint code. It's listed on some websites- Paintscratch or something may even list it. But never tried it.
One thing I looked into a little while ago was "real chrome paint" . Just google it. Not cheap but I've seen the results vary anywhere from hyper silver to VERY close to actual chrome depending on the effort you put into it.

I purchased some pain cans from ECS that were a pretty good match. It came in two cans one the base coat and one clear coat. I ended up fixing a small patch of curb rash on my sport wheels but unfortunately I can't find any pics.

As far as I know, the hyper silver color is a 3 stage process. Base coat, top coat, clear. I had my RS4 rims powder coated in hyper silver last year.

Audi_nightrider / GinobeS4: I came across the same thing on several different sites. Black powdercoat base /baked on silver and topcoat.

Rollerton: I actually discussed this with Dupli-Color about using the Dupli-Color chrome and follow it up with a clear top coat to mute the chrome a little. They advised against it and said it would actually turn the chrome a dull gray color.

Thanks! I'll check the ECS site and see if I can find it. I'm guessing it was Wurth silver and clear. It's a good match for the OEM wheel but not as bright as the Hyper silver.

I believe it is black, then silver and clear. I don't think there's a hyper silver wheel paint you can buy in a rattle can. At least I couldn't find one. I have used Wurth Silver and Clear previously. I just ordered a kit on Amazon that has silver and a 2K clear coat. The 2K clear will give a more durable surface as I live in NH. That said you need to stay with kits as if you mix and match on your own you may experience undesireable chemistry issues with primer/ base or base/ clear interactions.

Thanks Murph. I realize I can't get a true Hyper Silver straight out of a spray can. I just want to get as close as possible without a multistage process.

I have no experience with this but what about plasti-dip? It sounds like they can mix custom colors and with the different enhancers you may be able to get close? Worth a call/email?

I'll check when I get home. I can't find it on the site but I'll check when I get home as I still have the two cans. I know when I was searching for wheel paint I would have gone with the Wurth Silber...

I found the two bottles I have... MFG PN# LLS0M6Z17 ECS still carries it Clicky Click but looks like on special order and I don't remember paying $29 so apparently inflation hit... I'm assuming the Avus Silver Wheel paint is the same as the sport; only thing I'm unsure of is the match to that of the USP, although looks OEM. The paint comes in 4oz aerosol bottles so it would take quite a few to do multiple wheels; which seems like Wurth is a more cost effective option.

here's a tip if you are not removing the tires: large index cards work great to mask off the tires, just stick them between the wheel and tire and go all the way around. no tape necessary.
i actually purchased those same exact wheels from harttman today in 19", i've always like those wheels.

Thanks for the info Vic! The Avus wheel color is an OEM Silver. The Hyper Silver on my aftermarket wheels are not an OEM color. That's where I'm running into difficulty trying to come close to the "hyper" color.

What's wrong with the finish on your wheels now? Scratched/chipped or just dull? If they're just dull, get out the polish. If they're scratched/chipped, it's worth it to get the tires removed and the wheels blasted and powdercoated. If you don't have a friend in the tire/wheel industry, make one. The friend price for this type of work is surprising.

The finish is still bright. I guess the best way to describe the problem is that the powder coat is slowly wearing off leaving what appears to be sanding scratches under the finish. Currently you can only see them in direct sunlight but they are getting worse. I tried polishing compound but only succeeded in rubbing through the remaining powder coat As I mentioned earlier I only have $350 invested in the wheels. I'm really not interested in pulling the tires off and getting them refinished. If I can come up with something that can be a weekend project I will go for it. Otherwise I will just pick up another set of wheels when my tires need replacing and put these in the classifieds.

If the finish is that thin/fragile, you should chemical strip them and polish them out and just throw a coat of clear on them. Talk about a bright silver finish...

I don't disagree at all. I'm just too lazy to put that much effort into it. Hellava lot easier to just pick up another set of tires/wheels:-)

It does suck taking tires off to powder coat as I'm doing it right now to mine. Best of luck and like said flash cards work well to protect the tires.

One thing I recommend is get some air craft stripper it will save you a crap ton of time at the blaster. I do powder coating and hate spending forever at the blasting cabinet lol.

I know you are looking at keeping the Hyper Silver, but I think if you color match the wheels to body color it would look even better then the Hyper silver and would be cheaper to boot.

I tried to get a silver using plasti-dip. The black base with silver metalizer was a gunmetal, so I was told white base with silver metalizer would be a light silver. I'll let you be the judge...

I have replica rs4 18" wheels on my car.
I have the same colour wheels like these in the picture but they are in a bad condition so i need to respray them for tip top condition.
This is what i would like to get! doesnt mater how as long as i can do it whit aerosol paint.

bright silver aerosol paint cant be found..
i was thinking maybe a White Primer would help it bright up a litle the usual silver paints?

Wurth White-Grey Rust stop Primer + Wurth German Alloy Wheel Silver + Wurth High Gloss Clear Lacquer Or some matte lacquer would work better? or bouth of the mixt up.

dupli color makes a spray can of Audi/volkswagon hyper silver. I just picked some up for my Avus wheeels. I also picked up some spray cans of Dolphin grey from audi and it was black so I have to send that back.

Here's a thought that just occurred to me-- a few years back I had to refinish an old gas tank in my old SWb Porsche 912. I Bought some stuff to clean it all out and used POR15's gas tank sealer.
When you mix it up right this stuff comes out very bright shiny silver and it has the consistency of plasti-dip. I actually used the bit I had left over to paint the spokes on a steering wheel. Like POR15 it levels VERY well, I used a brush to apply it and the brush strokes disappear. The steering wheel looked like it was powdercoated bright-aluminum, and I never cleared over it.
Anyway, that was a few years back, but...it's a thought. if you were brave enough to try and spray it, it would be an awesome finish.

Let us know how that stuff turns out too, I'd be very interested in the results!

I would be very interested to see how this turns out. I have been in contact with Duplicolor and they have a bright Silver but it isn't the Hyper Silver that I am looking for. My RS6 wheels are aftermarket and the finish is definitely brighter than the OEM wheels.

I see where I can purchase an 8 oz sample of the sealer. I think I will pick it up to play with and see if it will work.

    Thanks!

Fletch I think the chrome would be the closest to the original, I experimented with it once and it turned out an almost perfect match to the original BBS hyper silver on my WRX.
