Quick question, I have 700 miles to go before I hit 3,000 miles since my oil change early winter, like November-ish. Would it be a big deal to wait another couple hundred miles at most to change the oil even though it's been close to 6 months?

Also, can anyone tell me where to get (online site with P/N please) MANN oil filters? I'd appreciate it. I run 6.5 quarts of Rotella T6 here as well.

I used to run 5w40 mobile 1 religiously every 3k until I started my car one day and heard lifter clack BAD. Long story short I changed the oil out to full synthetic 10w30 mobile 1. The problem went away within a minute of starting the car back up. I figure the oil pump is going or I just have a worn lifter or 2. The car's got 113k and is overdue for a tear down.

Btw after switching I've changed it twice already with the same weight oil and have had 0 problems. I do let it warm up completely though because of it being turbocharged. Maybe I should just try rotella 5w40?

Crazy, I've never heard of that happening. I wonder if it's cuz Mobil1 isn't full synthetic anymore and partically caused your issue.

OH believe me I was devastated going F*** F*** F*** in my head and it just took me pulling the dipstick to notice the oil was a little runnier then usual so I changed it I believe 1k miles early. Car runs great actually especially once its warmed up. I bought the car when it had around 96k I believe so who knows who ran what previously.

It sounded like there were nuts and bolts bouncing around under the valve covers.

My car makes scary noises for 1-2 seconds initially on start up if I let it sit for like 3+ days. However I think it's only cuz the car hasn't had oil pumping through it. If I turn if off afterwards and start it up again it sounds completely fine.

I'm trying to debate doing sea foam or something before my next oil change again with my car at almost 135k miles.

You can get Mann filters at a number of online retailers. Partsgeek.com I think is the cheapest I have found. But I haven't searched in a while..

And maybe Chevron Delo 400 5w-40 Synth? I found some locally, and after hearing good things about it on the TDI forums and seeing oil analyses that are broadly similar to Rotella, I thought I'd give it a go. Only a few miles so far, I'll keep everyone posted.

I would never recommend going heavier weight oil on these. The noise was most likely a cam chain adjuster starting to fail. I highly doubt your engine is anywhere near the point that it would need a tear down, even a stage 3 car could probably go 200,000 miles if it was a daily driver.

I've been switching my friends with S4's to T6, I'm still using Castrol Syntec 5w30 because I get it for free.... it's been used in this S4 since 40,000 miles and changed every 5000 miles, the car is now at 121,000 miles and it's still quiet and pulls hard (this was all by the previous owner but almost religiously done at the shop I work for). Also doesn't have any real oil leaks =) I also use the large Bosch filter, 72199 instead of the 72198

Thanks for the info I'm definitely going to switch to Rotella then. The heavier oil did fix the problem though so I'm not sure whats up with the car. It doesn't smoke, drink oil or coolant at all. The afternoon I started it I had just ran it the night before so its not like it sat for a few days. I agree on the not needing a teardown but the motor/tranny have to come out for my 1-2 collar issue and installing my new turbos.

I'll be pulling the intake for cleaning, checking for any bad valve seals and doing a leakdown test before I actually decide to follow through with it. I have a borescope as well. Thanks again.

Also the Beck-Arnley filters are Mann. I ordered a couple hoping as they have just put their own box on a few other manufacturers parts. And they did Beck Arnley box with a Mann filter in it.

5w40 Mobil 1 was never fully synthetic. There are only 4 fully synthetic oils that are commonly available.

    Mobil 1 0w40
    Valvoline SynPower 5w40
German Castrol (I think CastrolEdge now?) 0w30
    Pennzoil Ultra 5w30

Rotella T6 is a really good Group III oil, especially for our application (twin turbo). It doesn't coke easily, doesn't shear prematurely (looking at you M1), and has a good detergent package. You can usually get 5-7k miles per oil change of T6, especially with the extra capacity diesel filters.

Forgot to add that Im running a MANN filter.
0w is 0w is 0w. What M1 0w40 DOES do is shear down to a 0w30 in under 1k miles. Not a fan personally.

I use and love Rotella T6 as well.

@Fourplay: What qualifies as a diesel filter? I'm changing my Shell Rotella T6 after 3K miles or so, but it's also been in the car for six months already, maybe a tad longer, so I figured it was time to change it anyway with summer coming up.
