Assembly lube or engine oil for cam reinstallation?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm gonna pull the cams so I can do all of the seals, since I haven't started the motor in awhile I want to make sure I don't reinstall them dry. Do you guys recommend using assembly lube or straight up engine oil?

I replaced the cam seals recently and removed the cams. I was thinking about just using oil, but was advised against it. I purchased Clevite Cam Lube, and used it instead.

You probably already know this, but mark the cam chain and sprocket (I even took photos) so you can be certain everything is lined up the exact way it was before removing the cams. A little time here could save you loads of trouble later.

If the lifters are bled down and the car hasn't been started for a while I'd use assembly lube. When I do cam seals at work I usually just use white lithium grease. But yes, when you do this, make sure it's set the TDC and mark your chains to the sprockets. There are timing marks on everything, but using a paint marker will ensure that it's going back together the way it came apart and you're not second guessing yourself.

Engine oil only if you for some reason do not have Assembly Lube on hand and are in some big rush.

Thanks Max, now I have another question. Do you use assembly lube on the journals, and something like lithium grease on the lobes? or just use assembly lube all over the journals and lobes? I know that different cams setups require different techniques which is why I don't wanna put the wrong stuff on there.
