    Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Background: 2011, 10k miles, APR II, Milltek exhaust, EC HFC, EC HFIP/hoses

As I was on the freeway, I punched it to get around a car, and all of a sudden, the car just bogs down like it ran out of gas. I couldn't get it to rev past 3k, whether I was moving or at a standstill. No CEL, btw. After I scanned it, I got the following fault:

    2838 - Fuel Rail/System Pressure
    P0087 00 [101] - Too Low
Not Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
    Freeze Frame:
    Fault Status: 00000001
    Fault Priority: 2
    Fault Frequency: 1
    Mileage: 16474 km
    Date: 2012.03.31
    Time: 07:55:01

So just as quickly as it appeared, the problem went away. But after reading some postings in other forums, there's a good chance of it reoccurring. There seems to be a couple ways that people have fixed this issue: either by replacing the (2) fuel pressure sensors or by upgrading to a HPFP.

What's interesting is that some of the people who had this issue had very similar mods, so wondering if there's some correlation. I'd like to be proactive, and try to prevent this from happening again, but don't want to plop down any cash unnecessarily if I don't have to, esp for a fuel pump.

Anyone experience this, or have any insight as to what could be causing it? Thanks!

There is no upgraded HPFP for our cars, the ones at there are for the older 2.0T FSI engines and not the new ones with the roller cam follower on the exhaust cam. Those upgraded pumps are for B7 A4's, MKV Golf and S3.

Is the car running or does she turn off as soon as you turn it on?

Most likely your fuel pump is failing and will ultimately fail very soon. Happened to me about 2 weeks ago, had it checked, fixed, and now its running fine.

Have you tried replicating the error?

That would tell you 1 of 2 things... Fuel cut or bad fuel pump. Either that or you had a clog and should run a fuel system cleaner.

I guess I wasn't clear in my original posting, but the problem actually went away after limping along for about 10 miles after it first appeared, and hasn't returned (knock on wood).

I also wondered if there was an HPFP for the B8s, so guess there isn't, which basically leaves me with only one option of replacing the sensors, assuming the problem comes back.

One thing I'm gonna do though, as soon as I get a chance to, is measure the fuel/rail pressure, and hoping that someone on here can do the same so I can compare values/results. Thanks!

    Here's the procedure:

    Checking Fuel Pressure

    Prerequisites:

    Ignition ON
    Engine ON (Idle)
System voltage at least 11.0 V.
Coolant Temperature at least 80 °C

    [Select]
    [01 - Engine]
    [Meas. Blocks - 08]
    Group 103
    [Go!]
Field 1: Fuel Pressure (Low), Specification: 2800...7200 mbar
Field 2: Fuel Pump Adaptation, Specification: -1000...+1000 %

    Group 140
    [Go!]
Field 3: Fuel Rail Pressure (High), Specification: 25.0...110.0 bar
Increase the Engine Speed while checking this value, the Pressure has to rise with the Engine Speed.

    Group 230
    [Go!]
Field 1: Specified Fuel Rail Pressure (High)
Field 2: Actual Fuel Rail Pressure (High), Specification: 25.0...110.0 bar
Field 3: Deviation between specified and actual fuel pressure, Specification: max. 5.0 bar

    [Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

Had the same problem...thanks for trying though. I checked a couple of the other modules, and they weren't greyed out - only the engine module for some reason. Oh well...

Had this problem with fuel pump with car not starting, then waiting 15 minutes and it starts back up.was told no fuel is reaching fuel rail. Anyone ever had this issue or am I alone? Know of one company that was making a hpfp for b8 a4 but everytime I ask for progress (since December) I am told its still at the machinist. Will contact today to see if anything changes. Only down side to this car is we are basically stuck with stock fueling and my car needs more fuel so i can finally boost my Turbo over 22 psi!

    Thanks for the info.

I'm hoping I won't have to replace anything because I'm afraid to take it into the dealer due to all the TD1 buzz recently.

Sorry to bring up and old thread. But how did everyone resolve this issue? Did they bring the car in? Is it difficult to change the pump? It's happening to me at 33k miles...STaSIS tune and HFC with roc euro spacer. Thanks!

    Hey Guys,

This is what is happening to me and a few others as well. I replaced basically everything in the fueling system and made no improvements. It is only an issue when I am on APR Stage I, II, K04. We reflashed my car to stock and it is helping for the time being until we resolve the issue.

I got a different code but I think it's related to having stage II APR and fuel delivery. The gas light was on so I'm sure that had something to do with it. I cleared it and hadn't came back for 300 miles. When I get my laptop back I'll use my rosstech cable.

Clearly these problems are related to the APR tune, my guess is the fuel pressure request is being exceeded so the ecu try's to save the pump.

Mine turned out to be a bad ECU. It was replaced by Audi at no cost to me under warranty.

vinnys3, are you still under warranty? I've been told to have APR flash back to stock and take to dealer. My problem is the dealer is 1.5 hrs away and I won't have time this month to make the trip.

My mechanic thought that without symptoms no need to worry currently until I get it checked out, but who knows? Best of luck.

Vinny, mine ended up being an emissions fault which will require replacement of PCV valve and leak detection pump. Hope you got everything on yours sorted out

    All:

Still running the APR Stage 2+ BETA file. The stumbling that are mentioned in other threads has now returned again. I have an appointment with the local APR tuner in the morning.

Cleared my codes, and I am wondering was this issue identified with others?

The stumbling only occurs under load from 2700-3000 RPM. I looked for the other thread with the owners having similar issues but couldn't find it. I am running a BB exhaust, K&N Pleated filter and APR Beta Stage2+ R8 Coils, Gen 3 PCV valve and the recommended plugs. Some other owners thought there might be detonation occurring. I am quite baffled.

I am going to do some logs on the way home in the afternoon and see if Arin comment. Here are my faults as of this evening:

Hey guys, I am having an issue with my 12' Avant. I am getting a long crank when I got to start it. It does it cold start or warm and it has progressively ramped up and is doing it a lot more. I just replaced the injectors, carbon cleaning, and new spark plus. It is becoming very annoying because the car is still doing this, only other thing I can think of is HPFP, but I would hate to replace it and it not be that...

Oh one last thing, when I go to start it it cranks and it won't start till I give it gas like a fl'n classic car... I shouldn't have to give it gas to start on this car..

    Please any suggestions would help..

You may want to start your own thread. Have you considered lpfp in the tank or fuel filter ?
What about fuel pressure regulator valve ?

Hey bud, I know this is an old thread, but trying to find any help I can out here, I'm getting a p0087 only after the car runs for 45 min, regardless of Idle or driving with hard acceleration. Was it an error that only occured after running for a while as the part would overheat?
