Around town, where wind resistance isn't a factor its not a big deal (Wind resistance grow exponentially with speed, not linearly) you wont see much of a MPG hit, but you'll see a bit. Cruising on the highway is where you'll see the major drop. Right now with my between-the-bar low-profile whispbar setup on my avant I am averaging roughly 20mpg (80% city driving). This is with the bars AND my cheap
Yakima Aero Ski clamp. If I take the holdown off I bet my MPGs would be roughly even with a bare roof, since the Whispbars are extremely aerodynamic, and the between the bars setup is the lowest cross-section you can get on a rack.
