Vehicle keyed, vinyl wrap or re-paint?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My vehicle was keyed and will need to be painted. I've had my brilliant red since February 2010. I think its time for a change. The insurer has agreed to repaint the car. I send a lot of work to the paint shop as I handle a large municipal account. So I deal with this shop on a regular basis. I have no deductible so cost is not an issue for me. Anyway I was thinking of doing a vinyl wrap instead. Any thoughts from you guys would be appreciated. If I go with a vinyl wrap I will be changing the colour. Ideas on colours would be appreciated. My rims are satin black so a black car is out of the question.

I have a fairly deep key mark as well and figured that the vinyl would not be smooth in that area.

Isn't repainting a car a different color a task on a completely different scale than repainting a few body panels?

I would suggest getting the paint fixed over wrapping it. A wrap is not intended to be permanent.

Don't forget how soft vinyl is...It doesn't take much to mar it.

If you do end up wrapping it, you need to put some clear coat or something like that over the scratch so it doesn't start to rust.

Instead of worrying about the car you should worry about finding out who keyed your car. If it's a guy you catch him and tie him up in your basement and beat him. If it's a girl you get us her address and well have ourselves a good old fashioned Audizine gang bang.

id go with paint. At the end of the day, wrapping isnt permanent. If ever you choose to take the wrap off you'll be in the same situation youre in now, bad paint. If the scratches are down to the metal at all you'll also have some oxidization under it.

I like the suggestion above, paint with a satin finish

Thanks for your comments guys. If I wrap the car it will be prepped properly. My hood was pretty beat up anyway and needed to be painted. I'm not really in a much of a hurry.

The problem with trying to change the colour with a re-paint or a wrap is that there are areas that don't get painted/wrapped. ie, door jambs, under the trunk lid, engine compartment. I'd stick with a re-paint of the red....then if you want a temporary change, wait the required time (couple of months) for the paint to cure, and then wrap it.

If you have a supported claim with your insurance company, personally, I don't think you should waste money wrapping it. When the vinyl comes off eventually, youll still be left with a keyed car (as other posters mentioned) Fix the paint and wrap it later if you must.

That was mainly why I suggested satin finish of the same existing color. That's what I would do. Having glossy door jambs wouldn't be that big a deal as long as they're the same color.

Rus tis not likely as our cars are fully galvanized. I had stone chips down to the metal on my previous A4 and they never started rusting.

Re paint. If you ever have to take the vinyl off for any reason, biggest one being re-sale, you still have the original problem.
