    differences between S5 and A5?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi all, I just picked up a phantom blk S5 with milltek exhaust. I know the major difference from the A5 is the engine and cosmetics. I know its lower also but is it the same suspension? Also is the clutch the same?

I added milltek exhaust with resonator for the look and just a bit louder than stock, ceramic tints to keep the heat out since the car is all blk, and led license plate lights to match the other exterior leds.

For MY 2009 the major differences besides engine are that the S5 came with a "sports" suspension, whereas on the A5 that same suspension was an option called "S Line." This includes things like 19" Y spoke wheels, different front and rear bumpers, sport seats and steering wheel, and brushed aluminum interior trim. The S5 also came standard with a few other things that were optional on the A5, such as memory seats and heated seats. It also had a couple of extra exterior color options not available on the A5 - phantom black and Sprint blue - and interior inlay options: gray vavona wood and carbon atlas.

I know about the cosmetic options. What I want to know is if I need a clutch replaced can I just order the clutch for the a5 because the price is probably lower even though its the same. Same if I needed new shocks.

A5 with the sports package give you the same suspension as the SLINE but without some of the SLINE goodies. such as the sline wheels and badging.

It may depend on country and model year. For 2009 according to the US A5/S5 brochure phantom black was not offered for the A5.

lots of the parts are the same across the brands but get priced differently for the same parts. and getting the parts through a vw dealer is sometimes cheaper also. not sure how its funny, is this news to you?

Do all S5's have heated seats? Just curious as I might be picking up a set of seats to retrofit into my B6, but the seller doesn't know if they are heated or not. Thanks a lot guys!

It may depend on country and model year, but I know that for MY 2009 heated seats were standard in the S5 in the US, and according to the AudiUSA web site they are still standard today - so it would appear the answer to your question is "yes."

Well...not exactly. Brakes are quite different for example. For example the A5 S-Line has solid rear rotors. The S5 has vented rears with larger diameter. That means different calipers on rear. Also front rotors are larger on the S5 and different calipers. I think the sway bars may be different. Noticed that the H&R sway bar sizes for the A5 & S5 are different thickness. This would also imply differences other than the superficial.

The Audi dealer wanted to represent that it was the same other than the engine but after several encounters with the Audi mechanics and parts department indicate there are quite a number of small differences although not sure if they are super important. Surprising number of parts are NOT interchangeable between the two cars. Get a VIN from each car and go to a parts department and ask about the specific things you're curious about. It's quite informative.

Can't speak for pre-2011 or American versions, but the A5 2.0T S-Line has the same bumpers and side skirts as the S5, as well as the same front and rear calipers and rotors, and the same clutch (for the 6-speed manual anyway). There are, however, dozens of different part numbers for the A5 and S5, most of the changes due to age/superseding iterations rather than engine differences. Sway bars are only thicker on the RS5 with the facelift model, haven't looked at past years.

A5's with less than 200bhp from stock have different steering and brakes.

This is based on my 2011 pre-facelift, 2012 facelift, and a crap ton of time spent browsing ETKA.

But the bottom like is, its not like they have an XXXA5 brake pad that's the same as the XXXS5 brake pad just with different prices - Audi are rather liberal about chopping and changing parts between vehicles, you'd probably be surprised to know how many parts are from the A4!

Part numbers are 8T0 - B8 Coupe, 8F0 - B8 Coupe Cabrio, 8K0 - B8 sedan, etc. No A/S/RS distinctions, and the same brutal pricing across the board!
