When to change Engine Air Filter?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi everyone,

I've searched everywhere and I can't seem to find an answer to how many Miles/Km do you change the Engine Air Filter on a 2.0T Engine ?

I have Audi Care and I looked at the schedule and there is no mention of Engine Filter change. There is the oil, and dust/pollen filter but nothing on engine filter.

I just had my 55K service and looked over all my maintenance schedule invoice and not once Audi has changed my Engine Air Filter or a suggestion that it should be changed at a certain time. I haven't had a chance to looked in my owners manual yet, but I'm sure an expert on here can answer my question.

For those who have Audi Care, has Audi changed your Engine Air Filter?

Are they trying to cheap out on this? Or is it just not part of the maintenance schedule?

Thanks in advance for your answers!

As a rule I would say about 10k miles or a year. However, if you drive lots of dirt or sand i would say more often. I would recommend a K&N reusable filter. It'll save you money in the long run.

55K as per Audi manual. Do not try the K&N. While K&N might be nice for other cars the fitment is horrible on most Audis and the oil can destroy the MAF. I dont know of hand how often you are suppose to replace after that but around 30K or so.

I was always under the impression that it was 10k miles as well. However, no matter what filter you have, stock or otherwise, I would still service it every 10k miles.

K&N states that it's just an excuse dealerships shell out just for you to buy and force you to replace your filter. Hope they are correct because that's what I am running.

Thanks for everyone reply so far.... I just checked my Audi Maintenance book and I still don't see anywhere that mentions Engine Air Filter??? Maybe I'm going crazy, but I couldn't find anything that states a mileage where the Engine Air Filter is to be changed? Unless this is assumed to be changed when the Engine Oil & Oil Filter is changed??

Thanks for the link. Looks like they will even back you up if the dealer claims an issue for it. Sounds good to me.

US schedule, but has Km as well : http://www.audiusa.com/us/brand/en/o...intenance.html

Air filter is shown as a 55,000 miles, 85 Km swap - 55,000 miles is after AudiCare runs out, so I'd assume 85Km would be for you as well?

For those saying to change it at 10,000 miles - what kind of s*#@ conditions are you driving through?

I had mine out at around 20,000 mi and I was amazed what good shape it was in.

You can get a washable dry performance filter: http://afepower.com/shop/details_new...0L&&brandID=59

Select Dry Pro S. It's currently out of stock. That's what I have and I'm happy with it.

About 20-25k for me. I drive 60 miles a day/6 days. Most of that is in conditions where I use the "recycle air" button on my dash. Just swap it out now and see how bad it looks. From that you can judge +/- going forward.... OEM filter is not too expensive....
Oh and make sure to clean the other filter on the grille side... That one prevents moisture from getting in, but can get clogged easily.

Thanks for the link, it's the same schedule I have. It's "dust and pollen fliter" that is replaced at 55k. I don't see the Engine Air Fliter? That's what confuses me on this schedule.

So I called up my Audi Dealer and asked when the "Air Cleaner" is suppose to be replaced. Their answer was at 55K miles which equals to 85K KM. I swear this doesn't sound right, and I checked the Audi Care schedule and it does say replace at 55K miles. I'm assuming these air filters are super good, otherwise that's a very long time for Audi Care to change the Air Filter.

A VERY long time, as audicare stops after at the 45K mile service...

Don't wait until 55k to replace your filter. Here's what mine looked like the first time I changed it...

Now I change it at least every 20k.

    Thanks Blake,

I'm going to change it for sure. I'm just surprised that Audi's recommeded change interval is so high. Stupid me , I just assumed when they did servicing that a air filter would be something they would include with Audi Care.... I didn't even think to check until now.

It's not that the filter is super good. It's how the box is designed. There is a snow screen at the mouth of the funnel. It's more accessible and is to be cleaned at 15k, 55k, 95k, etc. miles. That picks up the big particles. Then there is the U path, at the bottom of which there is foam plastic that can pick up the heaviest particles. The Carbonio box, for example, gets rid of the U path to supposedly improve the flow, but it affects the filtration quality. Truth in engineering, Audi says.

The interval is for 85,000 km. That's my next service interval. It's about a $500 odd visit to the dealer. It's an oil change, engine air filter change, and cabin air filter change. Everything is straight forward, I don't know but haven't looked up how to change the cabin air filter myself but it's a service interval I don't plan to have done by the dealer. The next service is just an oil change. And the one after that is spark plugs at like 115. Pretty simple stuff if you're at these intervals.

Most itll take you is 2 mins to change the cabin filter. 3 screws to be unscrewed under the passenger dash.

Really? Interesting, I'll have a look. Is there a DIY you can point me to? I'll probably grab both air filters from my dealer Tuesday. I have a service appointment, my mech pulled up 4 fault codes relating to defroster flapper motor failure. I just picked my car up Friday, so I'm a bit upset the car wasn't fully looked over prior to delivery. But I was told it should not cost me anything given the fact I just got the car a week ago.

Check youtube or carcarekiosk.com. the dealer priced me 92 bucks which is a total rip off. The filter is only 14 bucks.

The diy video on this is literally 15 secs long. Thats how easy it is. Even my gf changed the air and cabin filter herself.

But for the b8, check under the passenger dash, unscrew 3 screws, pull open that foamy cover and pull the filter out. Replace.

I just changed the engine air filter on my 2016 A6 2.0T. I bought a replacement filter on ebay. WIX 49343. Fit perfectly. Cost was a shade less than $19.00. Install was embarrassingly simple. I just wonder what the cost is at a dealership. Yikes.

Yeah 100 bucks easy at a dealer for the engine air filter. I changed mine around 50k and it could have easily gone another 10k. It wasnt very dirty. It really just depends on your driving conditions.

Not to side track the discussion, but I've always put K&N in my cars, but when I talked to the audi shop who will be servicing my car (first time owning an audi) he said leave the stock paper in as the K&N's will ruin your car. This comes from a shop that does 50% service and 50% racing, builds and tuning.

I check it every other oil change. If it's dirty it gets cleaned. Mind you I have an Afe filter and live in the desert, so dust is a concern here choking out a filter. Had a Pipercross filter and it disintegrated in my air box and made for a fun time cleaning the mess up. Fortunately it didn't foul up the MAF.

I did pro 5 r engine filter from ECS. Love it. Slight whistle between 2500 and 3000 rpm. Did it myself. Took 10 minutes. Reusable.
