    how to unlock..battery dead

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My 1996 A4's battery died and i can't unlock the doors. I can't unlock it with the physical key because they have air locks and using the key will not work. The trunk also does not work. I live in chicago so the locksmiths are around the $100 range and i do not want to spend that much on just unlocking the car. can anyone give me some advice on how i can unlock it as soon as possible please? thank you

It should unlock manually, unless the front door locks have the internal rods disconnected.

Apply a jump pack directly to the engine mount (earth) and the main starter motor feed (+12V direct from battery). This will power the car, so you can use your remote fob to gain access. If you don't have a jump pack, you can use jumper cables from another car's battery, as long as the cables are long enough. I hope your ride isn't slammed.

I would also suggest you get your internal door lock rods replaced, or re-connected once you get your ride open. Good luck!

Maybe you could get the windshield off. I'm not sure. I would try contacting a local windshield place and ask them if they can remove it in one piece.

my key unlocked the doors by turning the key to the right i believe. the rods inside the door have to be disconnected if that doesn't work

Unlock is key to the left. Its directly connected to the mechanical lock, The battery has nothing to do with the door your trying to open.

For the rear trunk, turn key to the left and push the button in while the key is turned, should allow trunk to open.

If all this doesnt work for you, call a locksmith to come and they will open it in a matter of minutes.

this thread is pretty ridiculous. Im assuming you have but you just keep saying "the key doesnt work", what happens when you put the key in the door or trunk and turn it?

If you put the key in the door and trunk and nothing turns or unlocks, you are the unluckiest person there is if all the lock cylinders or mechanisms on the car are broken.

Just break a window, and voila problem solved, you can now get into your car lol

I went through this same problem a couple months back. On my 99.5 A4, the "flip up" ignition key would not open the trunk, so I used the additional "non flip-up" key that came with the car. IIRC the trunk lock is not controlled by the central locking system so you should be able to get it open manually with one of your keys.

I noticed that once you push the key into the trunk slot and turn to the left, it doesn't necessarily "pop" and may require you to lift the trunk up(mine was a bit stuck). Once the trunk was open, I laid down on my back and stuck my arm/shoulder into the ski boot leading to the back seat. In order to reach the rear door handle, I held a medium sized C-clamp in my hand and tried to hook to door handle. This is immensely easier if you have a friend guide you from the window.

    Good Luck!

have seen the drivers door stick like this but not all of them at once... try lifting the handle while you turn the key toward the front of the car... its worked for me on customer cars before...
