    1.8T smoking after turbo replacement

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok I bought a 97 A4 with a blown turbo. The turbo shaft was broken in two so alot of oil got into the exhaust. I have only drove the car 50 miles or so and the smoke has gotten better but still smokes slightly when idleing and it will only smoke after the car warms up. Has anyone had this issue and how long did it take for it to stop? Thanks

I was having the same issue with my 2001 A4. Old turbo blew, impeller grinded, oil in exhaust. I had a new turbo installed and it was smoking up a lot. I drove the car a good 100 or so miles before all the oil was burned out, if anything you might have burned all the oil out of the cat, but not the resonators+muffler

try going on a long drive on the highway, and keep the revs up when possible (no more than 3.5-4k, since you still have a break in period with the new turbo)

Took about 2-3 days for me before my car completely stopped smelling and smoking

If it continues what could it be. At times I think the smoke is getting better during a drive but at other times in the drive it seems to be bad. It will only do it when the car is at peak operating temp. What areas can I check to make sure its not the turbo?

Bought my A4 with a lunched turbo as well. Right after the replacement it was *huge* clouds of black smoke. About 10 miles of flogging and the smoke was getting almost legal, lol. I then took the car on a 12 hour non-stop road trip. The smoke was a problem for at least 3 or 4 hours. I had to keep the windows and sunroof at specific positions so I could breathe properly. So I'd say a good 250 miles or so at full temp, cranking at 3 grand and it finally cleared out.

If its the valve seals, it will typically smoke after idling for a period of time, or on first startup.

Ie stop at a long red light, then drive off and it belches blue smoke, its quite likely its the stem seals.

After it warms up it will start smoking on its own but if u do go to take off it will just puff a little not a huge amount.

I am curious if resolution was made on this. I'm having same issue but no cats, resonators, or muffs to burn oil out of any other ideas I do only have 30-40 miles on it so far but geez is it smoking big time.
