    Castrol Edge 5w40 = Garbage!!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok i have owned my b6 since new, and work for that dealership also. I did the pre delivery inspection on it when it came in also. So i know it was not beat on from the get go. The car currently has 51k on it with not a single internal issue or complaint. At 1k miles i did my first oil change and swapped to Mobil1 0w40 fs. For the past 9 years every 5k oil was changed. Never had a engine noise/ chain rattle even in cold winter temp below 30 degrees where i live. Car never used even a cap full of oil between changes.Well last week for the first time i decided to try a different engine oil as over the years i heard Mobil1 is not what it use to be. I did a oil change using Castrol Edge with Spt 5w40. Boy was that a big mistake.. 312 miles into this oil change and this baby sounds like a rattlesnake at startup. Anybody had any issues. I gonna go ahead and drain it. Wasted 95 bucks in oil. Mobil 0w40 is going back in for sure atleast for the time being.
Whats your outlook on this oil? Atleast next time i am going to stay with the same weight. Lol i should of know better.

General consensus is there are better options than the oem fluid.

Mobil 1 has been my oil since I got in Nov of 08' with 48k miles on it. Slight rattle has crept in up lately when it;s very cold but nothing out of the ordinary for this car, I have 98k now.

I don't know about other Mobil 1 products and how they may have gotten worse over the years, but M1 0w-40 is probably the best oil you can get in stores. I have not been satisfied with any castrol product. Edge 5-30 in my mom's wrangler pulled horrible UOS's after 6000 miles, GTX 5-30 looked terrible after 5000 miles on my gf's corolla

I used mobil1 0w-30 in my old S and have since stuck to it. With the Avant, the original owner has continually use the Castrol Syn 5w-30 blend courtesy of the dealership.

The Avant isn't due for an oil change until 55K (I do my changes between 3-5K as habit); it was changed around 51K.

I guess my question is, will it be ok to change up to M1 0w-30 with no foreseeable issues?

Sleeperstang... please keep us posted as to whether your switch back to Mobil stops your rattle on start-up. A good test.

Check your oil level. I seriously doubt one brand will cause more rattle then other. I have gone through many different brands and haven't experienced any difference in start up rattles.

I'd tell you to go back to the M1. It's pretty clear your motor doesn't like the Castrol stuff. And yes, it is true that some oils tend to be quieter than others (depending on the motor).

That Castrol oil is a rather unremarkable oil. M1 0w40 is better in pretty much every way, notably its very high viscosity index.

Yeah, it's gotten better. I think before M1 was so-so on the upper end of quality off-the-shelf oil, but apparently they have really stepped up these days

M1 0w40 has always been the halo product. The 5w30 gets ripped on a lot but if you look at the OEM specs it meets, it's impressive.

I find it incredibly hard to believe that because Castrol didn't work in your car, that sole fact makes it "garbage." I used Edge in my Mazdaspeed 3 and it ran beautifully and never had a problem. Instead of such a generalizing statement that the oil is "garbage," maybe your post could have been more informative to other board readers and less accusatory in nature, letting people know that you car simply doesn't like it. It's posts like these that make AZ look like honda-tech or some other shitty forum sometimes.

You literally could have erased everything except the last 3 sentences and gotten a more productive thought process across than ranting about how much this oil is "garbage."

I'm big on keeping the same brand and weight of oil consistent throughout the life of the engine. Since picked up our S4 Avant from the previous owner who had it serviced only by Audi like the OP with Castrol 5w40 every 5K (guy paid for oil changes), I've stayed with the same stuff. I changed the oil the first weekend we had the car for my own piece of mind and will have this oil analyzed after running it for 5K miles. I have a friend who can help me with this. Anybody care to do the same with another brand to really test this out?

Castrol oil did not last in my S4 very long....1k miles after an audi service oil change, the oil looked like it was in the engine for 5k+ miles. Very dark black color. I put in AMS oil and its still looks new after 1k+ miles. This oil seems to be good for the engine. Also the chart above lists AMS European as not VW 502 approved....it is and listed on the oil container.

I have mostly used the motul 8100 x cess, with occasional trials of other more readily available oils, like castrol, and mobil one 5-40 and 0-40, as well as royal purple 5-40. with the mobil one and castrol I have noticed a slight and VERY brief rattle on startup, and only on startup, as well as oil lasting literally 3 weeks of driving maybe 10-15 miles a day and not pushing the car hard at all especially when oil is cold (usually let it go aout 15 minutes before giving anything close to aggressive driving. The Motul has never let me down and I have not noticed a rattle at all when I go back to the motul, which is what I'm back to and will stick with, although I hear great things about the (forgetting the name right now) something 9000...

A single oil analysis won't tell you much except whether or not there's some crazy contamination or you've "worn out" the oil. Comparing two different motors on the same oil is even less effective since each motor has its own nuances and unique characteristics.

To be useful, you'd need at least 3 back-to-back analyses (including TBN and TAN results) from the same motor. And even then, I really doubt you'd see anything wrong with the Syntec 5w40. It's VW certified so it's an okay oil. If you are interested in the analysis, may as well start getting it done with your next change.

My go to oil is Motul Xcess 8100. Zero rattle one start up except when it starts to get to the end of its life cycle. I have never seen another oil perform this way.

Guys keep in mind that the Castrol 5-40 that the dealership uses is different than Edge/Syntec. The dealership stuff is SLX Professional

I see no reason to run the castol stuff in this engine. Although on paper it may look fine and dandy, it clearly doesn't work well in this engine. There are many other choices you can get off the shelf that are much more proven for our cars. Namely, M1 0-40 and Castrol 0-30. Or get something really good like Motul 8100. Sure, it may not be as cheap as you cn get M1 for with all the rebates and such, but who really cares? Skip eating out for a few days and save that money for your ever picky motor

Joe is correct **** unless dealers are buying the drums of bulk oil, they're likely using the individually-packaged OEM Castrol products known as SLX Professional.

There are actually two SLX Professional oils that would work in our car. One is a 5w30 that's labeled as "SLX Professional 504/507" and the other is the 5w40 "SLX Professional 502/505/505.01". I don't recall the specifics and am out of town at the moment so I can't look it up.

Neither is a very remarkable oil, in my opinion.

This is the oil I was planning on putting in my S4 next oil change. Good to hear you have had positive experiences with it. This seems to be the general consensus.

Try X-Lite 0w30 as an alternative. High VI, decent group V basestock content, and HTHS of about 3.6. Great specs for all weather conditions.
