    Difference between Sedan and Avant?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi all,

I'm new to Audizine and Audi in general. I'm about to start my search for a B6 or B7 S4 but can't decide between the sedan or wagon, though I am leaning towards the wagon. Other than the rear boday, are there any other differences between the sedan and wagon in terms of suspension components and front end body parts? I've read on another thread that the Avant has stiffer rears springs for the extra weight.

I'm asking because I own a WRX Wagon and I bought it over the sedan because of the versatility of the hatch, however I soon regretted the purchase because the suspension (WRX sedans have widebody fenders and wider track width) and front body components (front lip) are incompatible thus limiting the selection aftermarket parts to the less popular wagon specific components. Is this the case with the B6/B7? I know the Avant is taller but is the Sedan lower and wider?

If length of the cars are identical then is the Avant's cargo area (rears seats up with cargo cover in place) any bigger than the trunk of the Sedan?

Good points you bring up. I can't comment specifically on any dimensions, however I can't tell you that with the back seats down on a sedan, you can fit a ton of cargo. The trunk on the sedan is massive.

The avant and sedan are mechanically the same. There's no difference in height between the avant and sedan other than body type, meaning the sedan does not have some sort of better or lower or wider suspension. The avant is a bit heavier but has a better weight distribution. Most enthusiasts think the avant is the better looking car. Most everyone else thinks it's just a wagon and doesn't get it. It does have more cargo space than a sedan. It is much more rare and will usually command a higher price. It's usually the one you end up wanting. You can't get an S4 Avant after 2008

Just a quick note about cargo and storage area - the avant is a bit more narrow in the trunk area compared to the sedan. Where the rear fenders are, Audi put panels there to hide stuff - i Think an amplifier and something else. Which makes putting golf clubs horizontally a tight fit - i usually have to put them diagonally or fold down the seat.

In the sedan, it is left open so you can fit clubs more horizontally from fender to fender

I know it's a small thing, but it's a bit of a pain for this everyday item. Which is the reason why i almost always drive the sedan to the golf course instead of the avant.

However, if there's a choice to be had and you can source an avant, definitely pull the trigger. It is so much more rare than the sedan

That depends on the model. Lots of sedans have those panels too.

Love my avant, the added utility is huge. When I had a sedan carrying certain bulky things was basically impossible as you couldn't fit them through the door or trunk openings. That would lead me to have to take the item out of the box in the store parking lot so I could put it in my car. With the avant you open the hatch, put the item in, close the hatch and drive away.

All of the components you are wondering about are the same between the sedan and Avant, the only Avant specific body piece other than the hatch is the rear bumper.

I would pick an Avant over a sedan any time due to the body lines and versatility.

likely best to ask in the B5 forum I'd think, vs bumping a nearly 7 year old post in another forum
