    Chrome window trim to black

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Anyone plasti-dipped the chrome around their windows? Want to make mine black so I'm looking for options. I researched it and saw some people used a tape of some sort which looked really good. Not sure how they got it so smooth looking around the curves. Options to do this without breaking the bank?

Shadowline.com..... only like 30 bucks a roll and 2 rolls at most is what you'd need because you might make a mistake along the way. But if you figure it out one roll might even be enough.

people do occasionally plasti dip it, but shadowline is probably the way to go. I used it on my grill and bought 2 rolls for the window trim but winter came to quick (It's advised to either do it when its warm or have a heat gun. I had someone install it in about 2 hours for $90 and I still have probably a whole roll left.

I thought that trim was aluminum - actual aluminum? Is it not?

I've only had my car for a day and a half...

I plastidipped mine clear - gives it a brushed aluminum look. So long as you tape it off, it is pretty easy and goes on easier (if you are like me and not good with smoothly taping around corners). Cheap (~$6 for a can of black - plus ~$9 if want to make it glossy) too. Total time would be about 1 hour between taping and actually spraying. Can take it off in about 5 min too if need be. Check out Fonzie's side at dipyourcar.com too. Good luck!

I used shadowline trim vinyl... its starting to peel on the inside of the trim - so when you do it make sure you clean REALLY well.

Ohh, and get a friend to help if you've never done vinyl wrapping before, and get 2 rolls cause you'll screw up at least half a roll.
And.... allocate WAY MORE time than you think it will take. Either that or I am just terrible with it, which is also potentially true.

Do you know how your black trim is attached to the car?

Reason I ask is that when I swapped my chrome trim for Ti trim...the chrome door trim was riveted to the door...and the Ti trim is just pushed down in to place.

So going chrome might be a PIA....that being said I have my chrome door trim that I'd gladly sell you:)

Yes, but he also does vinyl work (mustang striped, British flag on mini cooper). That kind of stuff. Not sure if every tint place could do it but I'm sure you could find one that does vinyl work too

Will do... Oh yeah, and my wood grain interior trim as well, as I think the woodgrain looks outta place... Def planning on taking my time, supposed to be mid 60's close to 70 the next two days over here so I will prob split it up between both days. I just haven't decided whether to use any sort of clear coat or not? and if so, what kind to use? Since no one actually carry the plasti-dip gloss, I'd have to order some and dont feel like waiting. If anyone has used any sort of clear on their plasti-dip and it turned out well, please let me know what kind. Thanks =)

I agree, I have looked up many pics of the silver on black and you never really know until you see it in person, but I think w/ my lightly smoked LED tails, my tint, and the black rims, everything will tie together nicely. The only chrome I want to leave are the front and rear audi emblems, as well as the center cap chrome. IMO getting rid of the stock red tails make the biggest difference on the silver, it stands out like a sore thumb.

Sadly, I don't have it yet, should get it in a couple weeks. Decided to order it from ECS and save $40 to put towards a cupra lip or something...I need a damn good job for the summer haha

And A410, are you planning on plasti-dipping the wood trim? I too don't think it goes well with everything we do but it is still nicer than getting fishscale IMO. I considered trading and making a brushed alum set but don't have the time. You could also look up some wraps. I found this silver vinyl one which I think looks nice, and it won't ruin the wood trim either

Plasti Dip will not hold up to the wear and tear over time on interior tim and will start to fade, may also look uneven at certain angles. Go with the viny or cf 3M wrap from ECS tuning.

I debated for a long while on whether I was going to shadow line or plasti dip my trim..began both and never finished due to the look.
What I would recommend is calling Alex and Extreme Autowerks if you want it done the right way. Do right or do it twice. I promise you will be far more pleased as I am

Heres a few pics of mine when they did it about a month or so ago..

THe riveted parts are the easiest pieces to remove, it's the lower window pieces that are the worst
