    Po303 cylinder 3 misfire detected*

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So what I thought was a DV failure turns out to be a Po303 code - cylinder 3 misfire detected. Am I right in thinking this is a coil pack problem? If so do I replace just cylinder 3 or should I replace all 4? The car has 51k miles.

most likely it is a coil pack. i personally would just replace all 4 since they are cheap. i would keep the 3 "good" ones in the trunk(im paranoid from my shitty b6 1.8t coils). also, youre coming up on your scheduled maintenance for spark plugs (55k assuming you run OEM plugs) so i would get those done too. a plug would have to be REALLY fouled to cause a check engine light so i dont think those would be the source of your issue but it is a good idea to take care of it while youve got the coils out (not that its hard to remove a coilpack though). IF you do notice a severly fouled plug i would inspect your valve cover gasket to make sure its not leaking and fouling the plugs.

Agree with dbl030....replace all 4 and keep one of the spares in the car for future emergencies.

I just got my first P0301 and the 4 replacements are in transit.

I had a mkiv with a 1.8T and the same crappy ignition coils, hence the same strategy.

It's the one coil that can't be mixed with any others (having said that check what you currently have, my old ones are 07K 905 715 D (black) so I can use them if a RED goes bad. It will only be temporay, I'll order a single RED replacement and replace them one at a time next go round since I'll have the emergency stock to work with. I think he still has 4 for sale.

All the others appear to be useable and for the life of me I couldn't find anything that had proof about any one version being better than another.

I ordered 06E 905 115 E (red) becuase I wanted RED. I took a small chance, ordered them off ebay. Some guy had 8 new RED for sale asking $19 shipped. He had Make Offer there, I offerd $15 shipped ($60 for a set) and he accepted.. I think he still has 4 up for sale....check it out.

I just recently had the same code show up, but I had random symptoms of my car stuttering under acceleration. I spoke to my mechanic and we both initially went with the coil pack thought, so I changed them all, and I changed the plugs as well. My problem still persisted. Long story short, after doing some other tests, it turned out to be the cylinder 3 fuel injector that was bad. got that changed and now the car is fine and no CEL.

    just some food for thought...

Misfires are in new cars are typically 1 of 3 things. 1 Spark plugs, 2 fuel injectors, or 3 coil packs.

If you want to find out if it is exactly the coil packs, take the misfiring coil pack and move it to another location, you should now be getting misfires in that cylinder, this would indicate you have a definite coil pack problem, if the problem is still in cylinder 3 then you have some more reading to do.

Thanks for the info...I was naive enough to think the ignition coil was going to solve my problem. I won't toss that coil in the trash until I know I've got my problem solved.

Guess I better start to bone up on injector info., haven't dealt with them before.

Yah i think i will try changing the Coil packs around to flush out the real problem. I called the dealer today and they did change them under the recall back in 2010, so i am running the new 06H 905 115 pack. Thinking about this now it seems more likely to be a fouled plug or bad injector.

Is there any advantage to upgrading the OEM injectors with just a stage II set up (No HPFP)?

just because they were change 2 years ago doesnt mean theyre not bad. the coilpacks on these cars are weak. which is why theyre so cheap. what you can do is with the engine running, lift the coil out of the cylinder a little bit. if you hear it arcing, you know the coil is still working proporly.

1 in front 4 in rear. That means #3 is 3 from the front

However the firing order is 1-3-4-2 (unrelated but may be useful to some)

X2 I have had 3 coilpacks go bad since the recall replacement.. I have the Red ones now, and the car seems to idle smoother..

I put the 06E 905 115 E (red) in yesterday and cleared my codes....went for a nice ride down to san clemente and back and she felt nice and strong.

I've got the cabon cleaning on my radar and will clean the injectors when I do that.

CP's for me as well. I've had a set of the Red CP's in for 10 days now and running great....even improved my gas mileage. I realize the real time mileage is suspect, but filled up yesterday and per my calc's I got just under 27mpg on this tank vs just north of 25. And I was driving her pretty hard, wanted to see if I could throw a code.
