Any good reviews on Spec clutches?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
A lot of people say don't do it. All I have left to buy for my stg 3 build is the clutch/flywheel setup and 90% of the people I talk to tell me to stay away from the Spec clutch. Can I get any positive feedback from anyone here on the Spec lineup? Car and mods are A6 2.7t with BW K04's, ER's, EPL fueling and tune, RS4 Y pipe, RS4 Airbox, 034 3" DP's with test pipes, so it will be a healthy stg 3 build and I'm looking at the Spec stg 3+ setup with the 034 flywheel. Suggestions?

I hated my Spec Stg3. Held power fine, but its was awful to drive around normally. If it’s a race car, fine, if you drive it on the street, there are far better choices. I have been using Southbend, have not come across a kit from Southbend that I didn’t like all around. Shoot me a PM.

so, let me just get this right..

90% of the people you talk to, tell you to stay away from Spec clutches... yet you're going out of your way to find people that have good things to say about them?

    Why?

Also, search will bring up everything you need to know

In my opinion... The REAL spec stage 3+ (make sure its a REAL 3+) is the best single disk clutch on the market.

Buyer beware, there are companies out there that have sold the regular stage 3 or their own "stage 3+" in place of what Spec builts as their stage 3+.

Thanks for the input Tony, I just called Rich and we discussed Spec stg 3+ and OEM flywheel. Work on the numbers for me! Thanks.

I have the spec stage 3+ clutch and 034 lwfw. Works great. No increased pedal effort.

i just picked up a spec 3 clutch with the lightweight steel fly. I think what took spec down was their service.

95% of my SPEC 3+ clutch sales are the SA863F, which is the "true" Stage 3+ for the S4. I fully agree with you that it is the best single disc clutch on the market, and I've ran it myself as well. It is what I recommend to almost everyone who wants a stock driving clutch with incredible power holding capability and great wear.

We also sell an SA233F Coupe Quattro SPEC 3+ clutch with an adapting flywheel to fit on the S4, for folks who don't need the additional power holding of the SA863F and its higher cost.

Also, for those who mentioned the SPEC Stage 3, that is a 6 puck clutch; it is not meant to be easy to drive in the city. The + in the compound signifies a full face hybrid disc that offers far superior driving characteristics while holding even more power.

hmmmmmmm.... let me see, other than having to pull my trans after finishing the build because I used OEM flywheel bolts instead of the shitty SPEC supplied bolts, I would say it's pretty good. Honestly though, the pedal feels awesome but the only thing I'm trying to get used to is how sensitive and grabby it is in traffic compared to the RS4 setup I had before.

I bought my car with a spec3+ clutch and LWFW for a couple months now, and i would say it holds the power great, but i would also have to agree, i wasn't used to how sensitive and how high the engagement point was on the pedal. It took me some getting used to, and i personally don't like it as a daily driven car.

If or when i do my clutch and flywheel again, i would go another route, especially since its my DD.

I also have the SPEC 3+ with the OEM FW with only about 800 miles on the setup, and the sensitivity and grabbiness of it has definitely gotten better in those 800 miles. Feels just like the stock clutch to me

I actually poked around under my car today and found the two bolts that connect the dts bar to the trans were not screwed in all the way. I feel a huge difference after tightening those bolts, shifting is smoother and less hopping in first gear.

I drove a ft stage 3 car last weekend. It had the southbend stage 3 endurance clutch with the stock dm flywheel. It drove awesome, practically like stock imho. I'm going southbend for sure!

I've driven a few Spec clutches (not on an Audi) and I think they're great. There's something to be said for them when Porsche guys swear up and down by them, along with many other tuner platforms. The only issue I have heard of personally is their lack of customer support. However, ordering from 034, EPL or anyone else for that matter will obviously help with getting timely support.

Post up when you're all done and tell us what you think!

I'm happy with my stage 2 spec, also used one in my old cooper s and liked it. Light pedal and not too grabby at all for driving in traffic.

Don't forget, there aren't too many options if you want close to stock feel in a clutch that can hold stg 3 power. The Spec clutch feels better every day, hopefully with in the next thousand miles it will be pretty nicely broken in.

I never drove a car that has a twin disc, but I'm sure it takes plenty of getting used to.
