Help with Code P0411 Secondary Air Injection blah blah - Upstream flow

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi guys! I am new to this forum so be nice, lol.

Anyway, I just bought a 2004 A4 last Friday and I got a stupid CEL already. I went to O'Reillys and used their scanner and it gave me an error of P0411 Secondary Air Injection Upstream Flow. I just kinda looked around the engine when I got home and was trying to see if there is any leak/broken hose... Not really sure what to look for exactly. I'm going to have look again tomorrow when it's light out.

I will be going on a snowboard trip this weekend which is about 2 hours away from where I live. Do you think it's fine to take it?

    Thanks for your help!

you can drive the car like normal. the secondary air pump is strictly for emissions purposes and will not cause any stress to any other engine components. the pump however, is about 400 dollars.
all it does is send extra oxygen to the catalytic converters on cold starts to quickly warm them up for optimal use and you will not pass emissions (if your state requires it) with that code. but is perfectly safe to drive.

It was not okay to drive

Took it to the ski resort yesterday which is about 95 miles from where I live. Got there fine. But on the way home, just about two miles from the ski resort, the CEL started flashing at me! I pulled over to the side of the road and the car started vibrating, shaking really bad. It felt like it was going to blow up. I was so scared and called Triple AAA. I had them tow me to the nearest town which was about 15 miles. The towing place has a mechanic who works on Audi's so hopefully he will be able to take a look at it today.

Based on these symptoms, sounds like a bad coil, right? How much should I look into spending?

    Thanks guys!

Hopefully they havnt been changed under recall. Make sure you ask. So it will cost you 0. CP's are about 20$ or so a piece. Take about 10 minutes to change all 4. Also the code - Take a look at the passanger side. just behind the headlight...look at the tube see if came undone. Had similar issue in the past.

Yeah, one coil should be a $50 fix MAX for everything. If the shop charges you more youre getting ripped off.

This has nothing to do with your SAI not functioning properly, and is also why everyone should keep at least one spare coilpack in their trunk at all times

Ugh. The shop just called me and said I have a bad coil. He's charging me $60 for the part and $34 labor which is not bad. BUT then he is charging me $68 for diagnostic. Isn't that included in the labor? This shop is in a really small town and if I have it towed to where I live it would cost lots of $$$$ 'coz it is 95 miles away. Do I have an alternative here or just deal with it and get the car?

$60 JUST for the coil?!?!? The worst price I have seen on a coil is $45... it should be 20 or 30 for the coil and the same in labour. $68 for diag is $$$ too, that should be around $45... Alternative would be changing the coil yourself?

Make sure you get a detailed work order/receipt from this mechanic. If your vehicle has not had the recall yet, Audi should cover the parts and labor for you I believe. You have to submit for compensation.

Can I get reimbursed for this? I bought it used and the previous owner has never replaced them before.

You might be able to. Call audi of america and see. Also go to a audi dealership and get the others looked at. Call and give your Vin 1st they can tell you if has had the recall done.

Take it to the nearest Audi dealership.

If it isn't covered under the recall you will probably pay close to the same if not less.

If it is, then it will be free. Changing coil packs is incredible easy, I think hes trying to rip you off because your a girl.

I just called the local Audi shop here in town. They're not a dealer but they're Audi Certified. They looked up my VIN and the previous owner hasn't changed the coil pack. They said they will replace mine for free! Yay! So happy to hear this! Now, I'm just going to pay the mechanic from the other town so I can drive it back to here. And hopefully, I can get reimbursed for that.

    Thanks for your guys' advice!

Good to here that, as far as the secondary air fault. Most of the time I see broken vacuum lines going to the combi-valve located on the back of the motor. Hope this helps :)..........love the pic btw

I picked "him" up last night. He is running so smooth I didn't know that made a HUGE difference. Even the gas mileage is better.

I wanna do some mods first then I will post pics. Lol. I got the windows tint the very first weekend I got him. But I wanna do clear corners first and my tires look like crap. I am sooo excited!!!

Great! Things like coilpacks and spark plugs can make your car go from feeling like an '88 jetta to a brand new car.

Clear corner is a great mod, I didn't do it until recently. It's small, but visually it makes a big difference. Looking forward to seeing it

Just a side note, if your SAI pump does go bad, you can pick one up off amazon for about $250 shipped. Hell of a lot cheaper than the dealer and swapping it out is cake, only takes about 10 minutes.

    My baby is sick again!

Just before I pulled up to a car wash, solid CEL came on again. I have an appointment this Thursday to get the rest of my ignition coils replaced for free.

Someone tell me this is going to get better!!! Or this is how it is every week? Lol. He is soooo much fun to drive and I really can't see myself driving a different car. Sigh.

An alternative to SAI pump replacement would be removing the SAI system altogether... You can probably get a tune for your car that eliminates the CEL.

Search amazon for: audi secondary air pump

How much did my coilpacks and spark plugs cost? or the clear corner mod? Coilpacks should be around $20 a piece... Clear corner mod is free! You take your headlight out, remove the bulbs, drill 2 small holes to pop the corner lens out, then pull it out with your fingers, seal the holes with some sort of sealant.

I'm getting my ignition coils replaced today. Turns out I have a bad combi valve. They said it would cost around $400 to fix this. Is that too much? anyone?

I'm not sure how the combi valve could go bad - it's fairly simple. I would do coils for sure, but I don't know about the valve, it may just be a cracked or broken line.

The valve is metal and it is on the back of the head, they can get clogged with gunk. They recommend replacing it whenever the SAI pump goes bad. A new one is ~$75 with gaskets from GAP, and replacing it is easy enough. $700 seems astronomical to me, I'd do it for a friend for just a beer.

Excellent, they will take care of you there - glad you didn't take it to some oddball repair shop. Click on the link in my sig or the one in my last post, sign up on the site and meet up with the local crew. I was just up in the Zoo last month and we had a small GTG, maybe you can make it to the next one.

Edit - there's guys up there that work for beer etc., plus you are a girl (I assume from your avy lol), so you're in. I can vouch that there are no creeps

I had the same issue with the sai and if it is the combi valve i'm sorry to hear that but first things first check the 40 amp fuse under the hood and make sure it isn't fried because that is a 2 dollar fix and second you can get a new sai pump off of the classifieds for 50 bucks no need to spend all that money

I just got that Code too. But I have already changed the EGR Valve. Is the EGR Valve and Combi-Valve the same? I have a 2000 Audi A4 1.8T 5-Speed Manual, and I am the ONLY Owner. The car is doing 429830 Original Miles as of 10/26/2012. I hear no whines, whistles or whatever when the Engine is off or on. What could be another Problem? When I got the Light, I went to Discount Auto Parts, and on the Scanner it showed P0411 Code. Could someone tell me some other Low Cost Repairs please, before I tackle the Pump?
