    Oil pressure switch malfunction

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Has anyone got this problem before?

    This is the DTC

    5580 - Oil Pressure Switch
    P164B 00 [044] - Malfunction

Car goes into limp mode at 4k and a message comes up into the instrument cluster:

    ENGINE MAX SPEED 4000RPMS

We changed both sensors with good ones from another A4 but the ECU still throws the EPC light and car goes into limp mode.

    Any ideas?

Did you clear the error using VCDS?

Yes I tried but the error is persistent, it doesn't go away after clearing DTCs only after the car is turned off and on again, but it comes back right up again as soon as the engine speed is over 4K

    Anyone experienced this problem before?

both sensors were exchanged and still the issue remains the same. It seems a common problem with other 2.0tfsi B8

    Hi

I have the same problem and was wondering if you ever got to the bottom of it?

Perhaps you actually have a low oil pressure problem : worn oil pump, or worn crank, connecting rod, or camshaft bearings.

Put a mechanical oil pressure gauge onto the switch port, and see what you actual oil pressure is at idle, and at 4000 rpm. Do this with a fully warmed-up engine, and compare your readings with the min specified pressure in the factory service manual.

If the oil pressure is OK, check for an intermttant open (or short to ground) in the wire to the pressure sensor.

Ive got the same problem, I've replaced the sensors in hopes, and also replaced oil pump, pressure regulating valve, PCV (since I had crankcase pressure) which helped, and also main and rod bearings since I was down there. Anything helps let me know!

When referring to 'both sensors were changed' and 'the brown and the blue' (or so), what locations and sensors/switches are meant? I am only aware of the oil pressure switch right under the oil filter, front and top of engine!
Is there a second oil pressure switch?

Here is another B8 comment: "Both oil pressure sensores replaced (038.919.081K, 04E.919.081A)". Looking up those part numbers, one is the "brown" single pin, the other a blue 'two pin'.

I only find the single pin under the oil filter. Is there a second, two pin? If so, where?

I just changed the one at the oil filter (call it 'brown')? Still getting the code. Also fresh oil and filter change, but code comes right back up:

Look lower and to the left of the filter. If it's dirty it may not look blue.

You did all at the same time?

Where is the 'pressure regulating valve' located? Is it this?

Replace the switch, they are like 15 bucks usually. Bosch I believe is the OEM.

i found the 2nd oil pressure switch, changed that also. No difference.
installed mechanical pressure gauge and measured the oil pressure. In this case. the idle as well as the higher rpm was at low end or below the specified range.
These engines use TWO switches to control the oil pressure. They lower the oil pressure at higher rpm to take the load off the pump and therefore reducing the gas consumption (vs. non regulated oil pumps that run fairly high oil pressure at high rpm).

Since the 2.0T engines have the design/material defect in the bearings of the balance shafts, the high wear causes low oi pressure as the first sign of pending engine failure.
Next, the balance shaft will seize, which can cause the timing chain/belt to jump (bent valves, new engine), or oil pump sprocket shears off (in my case).

The common failure of the engine result in extremely high demand for used engines ($3,000 for 100k engine !!!!) and the oil pump/balance shaft part ($500 on ebay !!!).

    Thank you for your reply.

For my 2010 A4, I ended up switching both brown and blue oil pressure switches, warning light would not go away

After "oil change", warning light went away.

to be clear on a few posts above the oil pressure switches dont " control " anything. they merely report oil pressure is below or above spec to the ECU at certain driving conditions. The oil pressure is " controlled" by the ecu via a solenoid valve on the bottom of the block just above the oil pan.

Definitely worth doing but sadly I think mist oil pressure failures are attributed to the cam shafts on this model.
Alway good to hope for the best but plan for the worst.
