Pass side wastegate replacement w/ engine in the car?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm having a problem with a wastegate and need to replace the wastegate on the passengers side turbo. Anybody ever done this or know if it's possible? From the bottom of the car, I can't even see the two bolts holding the wastegate to the turbo.

No, not really possible. Driverside, yes.

You can pull the downpipe and transmission and starter and do it.

Yes... You will have to remove the motor mount bracket on the passenger side of the block. If you have a nice 8mm ball allen and some basics it should only take half an hour to remove it. You obviously need to support the engine while you do this. I believe you have the stuff for that. You will also have to remove the turbo's inlet pipe. You should be able to squeak it by at that point.

    You've done this? I wasn't able to.

With my GT's, it was even worse.

Yes. What's your hold up when you tried? I've never tried with gt28s. I can also do it with my RS6 turbos just fine. The lower bolt to the wastegate is close to the coolant line, but doable.

Seriously??? I can show you how to do both engine mounts in 26 minutes:) you're only a couple minutes out from pulling either Wastegate.

So you've replaced the passenger side wastegate in 30 minutes from floor back to floor?

I don't mean to insult you by any means, but I find this very hard to believe. I know many people who can pull a motor in 2 hours or less (I am not one of them lol), but I've tried from every angle to get the WG off and I just cannot do it on my Eliminators. Perhaps it is different on a K04 based turbo, it's been awhile, but you have to remove the starter to access the bolts on the compressor cover, things are so jammed in there.

For me, this means pull front clip, pulling alternator, pulling starter, pulling motor mount bracket, fishing out WG, and then resetting it. To properly set the WG, you need to have both DP's off to inspect when they are opening. It takes me less time to pull a motor then deal with that, and I can usually find an excuse to have the motor out for something else.

If you can do it in this time, please come show me your ways. =(

Maybe your eliminators are different. I've never even seen a set. I pulled my inlet and took a pic last night....is this the bolt you say is too difficult?

I understand stuff is jammed in there. You can also use a Boroscope to check Wastegate actuation. Half moon wrenches, s shaped wrenches, shaved crows feet, and indexible ratchets are in my box for one purpose......beating up on labor times on a 2.7. I used to work on those every single day until I changed over to this horrible brand called bmw last year. I visited your shop once when I was at training. That was enough for me :)

Well it is tight, but possible to change the wastegate with the engine in the car. Here is what I found on mine: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...67#post7316367
