    Rebuilding PS rack?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So my power steering rack took a shit on me.

Originally i was going to buy a new rack and go through that whole process but recently I'm starting to think of other options.

My friend goes to an automotive school and he said he's rebuilt rack seals before and he would do mine.

Has anyone on here ever done this or know if its possible?

It would save me a lot of money so I'm really leaning towards this option.
He already found a repair kit too.

    Thoughts?

    Much appreciated.

Repair kits are not available from Audi or ZF. You might be able to source the seals separate but who knows. Might want to look at a reman rack and just replace it. Good luck!

just buy a new one. they are one of the worst jobs there is to do on the b5. I hated every moment of my life when i replaced mine. If it didn't work after fighting to get it in, i would have taken a sledge hammer to my car.

The only thing that I'm worried about is that i have a 2.8. From what i seen the part numbers are different from the 1.8 and 2.8.

Cheapest i found the rack that matches up with my car is 500$

Hmm this is true. Well the 2.8 has a steering damper where the 1.8 does not. From pictures they look like the same steering rack, and if thats the case then you could just bolt the damping gear on from your original. It might be worth a shot to give the dealer's parts department a call on it

My experience with remanufactured steering racks has been a waste of money. I ended up paying twice. It is a gamble getting a remanufactured steering rack that has been remanufactured to meet QC standards.

IOW, you pay now for the real deal or you'll pay later (twice) for a cheap POS.

Okay but i already have the rack..it has a warranty and everything. Thats not my problem.. Im trying to figure out how to line them both up together. I dont wanna mess the rack up by turning it too much or something or turning the steering wheel too much so the clockspring gets messed up.

It's not going to hurt the rack to turn it. That's kind of it's job, actually. Nor will it hurt to turn the steering wheel, as that is also it's job...to turn.

You just don't want to turn the steering wheel a bunch of times before you bolt it up. That's where you run into problems. If the car has ESP (equipped with a steering angle sensor) it is just important that it stays centered. So leave the steering wheel at the centered position, install new rack, center it, and then bolt it up. You can turn it a bit to line it up, just don't give a full rotation or anything.

Yeah i left the steering wheel straight when i took the old one out now the new one is in and the gear doesn't line up. It looks like i might have to turn it about 45 degrees to line it up.

I also just replaced all my control arms uppers and lowers, my pass axle, and the tie rods.
Maybe that has something to do with the steering being off?
The company told me they center the rack before they ship it..im not sure if i could of maybe shifted it as i put it in?
