B7 Halogen Headlight. Upgrade to Xenon/HID??

Hey Guys. I'm sure this has probably been discussed a bunch here, and I'm sorry if it has been covered. I did a quick search and I couldn't find any info on this. So I'm sorry for the newbie B7 question.

I'm looking to upgrade my Halogen headlights to HID. Do I need to upgrade my headlights to a projector headlight to do this? Or are there people on this forum rocking a B7 non-projector headlight with an HID kit? I had a 95 S6 in the past and I was able to just buy a HID kit from DDM and it was plug n play. I've heard rumors you can't do this on a stock B7 non projector headlight??

I'm also not opposed to upgrading to a projector headlight. However, w/o breaking the bank and spending $$$$ on an OEM set, the only projector headlights I can find online for a decent price all come with the R8 LED style look. Does anyone know of a good projector headlight w/o the LED strip?

Once again I'm sorry if this has been covered before. I appreciate any help you guys can shoot my way.

While you can technically just throw a plug and play HID kit in your non-projector stock housing, a lot of people say that the light output you get from this is scattered and full of glare.

If you just want a whiter looking bulb for your stock housing you could always look at Hoen bulbs. A friend of mine just put in a set for his low beams in his stock housing and I think they look really good.

As for getting a cheap set of protector headlights without spending too much money or getting one with an LED strip (even though they look pretty sick in my opinion), someone on here got Depo headlights or something like that which look and act a little like the OEM xenons. Not sure how much they cost or anything but I think the guy that had them liked them.

Branden- Do a little more searching and you will find some in depth information on this. I am also new here and a new Audi member and I am currently in the market for xenon headlights. You will see a lot of information about upgrading to both oem and aftermarket xenon headlights. Putting a drop in HID kit into halogens lenses looks like crap and will blind other drivers. I would suggest looking into oem lenses or a quality aftermarket set from a site like www.ecstuning.com

Also keep an eye out in the classifieds because I hear oem sets pop up from time to time.

Search for my thread titled "pondering an hid retrofit". That should answer most of your questions about upgrading your current headlights.
