ELM 327 Vag Com Capability

So, I am looking at getting one of the ebay VAG COM USB cables. Yeah, I know its not as good as the ross tech cable. But I don't want to spend $500 on this solution. All I really want to do is check trans fluid temperature for the ATF change, and add the remote windows functionality.

Can I accomplish this with the ebay cable? What about the ELM 327 cable, is that better?

A real one is $300 but yea defintely pricey. I don't think you'll be able to use it for the remote windows function, I think ou can only change codin with a real cable, though I'm not positive.

The ebay cables work, you can do almost as much as you can with a real cable (assuming you register VCDS-Lite). The elm327 won't work with VagCom, that is just a basic OBD2 cable (which will work with other OBD2 software)

You can buy that one for 20 and have it in a few days, or buy one from hong kong for less than 5 bucks, but it may take a while to get to you.

Thanks for the reply. So- if I get the ELM327 cable, will it be able to do the same functions (control remote windows, view trans temp) as the VAG COM cable, if I use the other software (non VCDS)?

No, the other software will only do your basic OBD2 functions. You need VCDS to change those settings. I recommend downloading the latest version from Ross Techs site. The one on the CD they send you will be 409.1 (which is an old version) I have my ebay vag com cable (blue one) for my audi, and a elm327 that I use on the wife's xterra.

This is my cable. While it works with VCDS, it is slow. I've used it MANY times for different things, and never had any issues (other than it being slow)

I bought it from ebay years ago. I don't remember what seller it was, just that it came from either china or hong kong. The one you linked is probably the same.
