Puzzle for the B5 vets: Which relay in these pictures is for the fuel pump?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Car is a 96 A4 2.8 12v. Everywhere I look on the internet and the nearest large Audi dealership says the relay number is 372 yet I see no relay marked 372 underneath my dashboard. My fuel pump isn't priming and I'd like to start with its relay before I test and/or replace the pump.

There are two sets of relays underneath my dash, one set in front and one behind the first set in the back. Images # 1 and 2 are the front set. Images # 3, 4 and 5 are the back set.

Which relay in the following pictures is for my fuel pump?

There's a relay hidden behind an object to the left of the sideways 204 in the first image. This hidden relay is marked 213, is seated with the numbers upside down and is shown in the second image.

Another relay marked 213 is halfway hidden in the above image of the back set.

If you can't ID my fuel pump relay from the above images, can anyone atleast tell which set of digits the dealership uses to ID the relay in the last three images?

There are, in fact, 3 relay panels behind the dash there:

    - Central Electric (8 terminal posts and 6 relays arranged horizontally above those posts)
    - 13-way Relay Carrier (directly above the central electric)
    - 8-way Relay Carrier (back behind both of those)

**The arrangement of the relays on these panels is NOT the same for all B5's. Mostly, the differences are between DBC and DBW cars.

For a '96 12V, the Fuel pump relay is on the Central Electric, position #6:

To verify, I pulled up ETKA. For the 1996 model year, AFC engine code - it gives the location code "6" for the fuel pump relay, and relay code "208" OR "372". 372 likely being the updated variant.

Where would the B5 section be without you, walky. I'm on my way to Autozone after lunch to test the relay marked 208 with a multimeter and 12v source. Is that how you would test a relay to be functional?

I've got to get my own access to ETKA.

If you're still there, walky, would you mind seeing if ETKA or your other top secret resources indicate which relay prongs are which? I can't seem to find much from a search and I'm not sure whether Autozone will have this information or not.

Sure, top secret resources it is. (lol, you guys crack me up)

T is ground. 86 is power. That is what energizes the coil.
30 is voltage supply and 87 and 87a are the loads. (output to fuel pump fuse, etc).

So with ground to T, and 12V+ to 86, you should get a nice click. Then you would test for continuity between 30 and 87, then 30 and 87a. Those should be closed with the relay energized, and open up when you remove voltage from the coil.

I still cant figure out why you're not a moderator here. Thank you x infinity for the information you provided earlier, it was such a great help to me. I took my relay marked 208 up to Autozone and with the ground to T and 12v to 86, we heard no click. Since that determined the relay as faulty we decided to try every prong combination between the ground and 12v leads and never got the relay to make a click sound. For some unknown reason, Autozone doesn't have a replacement fuel pump relay available for my car so I have to search elsewhere. Anyone have any suggestions on where to find one, or better yet have one for sale? (I refuse to pay the $70 the dealership wants.)

::fingers crossed I wont have to replace the fuel pump::

Anyone ever take the risk with one of these $20 no name ebay relays? When I asked the sales rep on the phone for a brand name she told me it is "Replacement".. ugh. Since I'm on an extremely tight budget, with the 30 day return policy including free return shipping and a 1 year no hassle warranty on failures, I'm on the verge of mailing the money order today.

Moderator? Nobody ever asked me I guess. That sounds like entirely too much responsibility.

Anyway, here is a link that may help:

You say the fuel pump isn't priming? Does the pump run at all? Does the car run?

I see that relay for $13.50 but I'm not sure its the right one for my 2.8 12v AFC engine. I would definitely buy from ECS before I buy one off of ebay if I could find the right one from ECS and the price were anywhere near $14 like that one. Can you find the fuel pump relay for my engine on ECS' site?

Regarding the fuel pump, I'm really not sure whether it runs or not. The car doesn't run, which is what I'm trying to remedy all throughout this thread. I'm getting spark and now I'm trying to make sure that I get fuel. When I put the key in the ignition and put it in the position right before the engine cranks, the fuel pump is supposed to make a noise when it primes. It doesn't make that noise and therefore isn't priming. That would mean that the fuel pump isn't running right? Do I need to remove the fuel pump and hook it up to a 12v to know whether the pump is running or not?

Ah, I posted too soon. Found the page I'm looking for that specifies my car at the top right of the page.
