    Grinding Sound when turning

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The last couple of days I have noticed a grinding sound come from my front wheel only the first time I turn and the sound only lasts few seconds. I can feel it along with hearing it. Anybody have any idea what I should be looking to fix?

My car does it too. This is "normal," according to Audi.

What's funny when I got my car this was on my short list of issues with the car. My car would only do this on very slow turns l/r like when pulling into a parking spot.
I checked out the front end and could not find anything. At the same time my r/r door would not turn on the interior lamps when opening it. Also came up with nothing.
Now the lamps work and I have not heard the noise in the front in months. My car fixes itself. FTW!

Mine also does this sometimes. I've read that this may be brake related.. I am planning on changing the brakes once it warms up a bit on mine. I'll report back (if I remember).

Any time I'm turning very slowly at near-full lock or full lock. For me, this is almost everyday when I go in and out of my parking spot. The good news is this doesn't appear to get worse over time or negatively effect my car in any way.

I've had my car for almost 5 years now and this has been going on since then. About one year ago I replaced all my pads and rotors without any change.

I couldn't tell you with pinpoint accuracy what the problem is, but I can promise you that its drive train related and has nothing to do with your brakes.

I have a B7 and my wife has a B6 it does it on both of our cars, only when going very slow and when the wheel is almost fully turned. I always thought it may be a control arm issue, apparently it may just be normal.

I have it too. Annoying. Sometimes it's much worse than others. Really strange.

Weird, I thought I was the only one with this issue. Thought it might be low power steering fluid, which it was ... topped it off and I am still having the issue. Must be normal operating procedure?

I did and it was full. It's suspension related not p/s pump/rack related. Funny for so many people having this think someone would have nailed this one by now.

I have this too, thought it was control arms, but they are in good shape. Only happens when I first start driving when the wheel is almost at full lock in either direction.

Happens to me in my b6 too. Low speeds and feel turns. Sounds like wheels are rubbing something. On my b7, I don't have this problem.

Maybe if enough of us complain to AofA we can get some kind of recall. Doubt it but you never know.

I believe it is related to the center differential. When I had the 4 to 1 (JHM) installed in my B6, the grinding got very pronounced, JHM said it was normal, especially when cold.

My car (06 B7) does this as well. I thought it was power steering related. Took it in to the dealer and they said it's normal and has something to do with a pressure release valve in the power steering system.

It's not really a grinding with my car, more of a whine ... which is why I thought it was PS related.

This was taken from a post on Audiworld..

If you hear a grinding noise while the steering wheel is turned and held at an angle and the car is moving in a curve the noise may be from the front wheel bearings lift the car up and test each side by rotating the wheel and feeling for vibration and resistance in movement. If the noise only comes while turning the steering wheel and regardless of weather the car is in motion or not then check you power steering pump tie rod ends. Also make sure to check your serpentine belt to make sure its aligned properly and the right tension because it runs the PS pump.
    Thoughts?

I was told by my SA that it's the "quattro crawl" and all 3 of my audi's have made that same noise. Weirds me out too. Doesn't sound right?
