Oil leak from back of motor

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ive had oil residue on the back of my motor for a while now but just noticed it starting to get worse. Its on the passenger side and is leaking down onto the tranny. looks like its coming from the combi valve area. Is there oil seals on the combi valve or anywhere else back there that would blow oil?

There is a paper gasket on the SAI valve. Another common leak point is the VVT module on the back of the head. There is a gasket and a half-moon seal that tend to leak after a while.

.....or it could simple be your valve cover gasket leaking

Same thing happened to me. Ended up been the Valve Cover Gasket. Some say is easy to replace, I rather not get my hands dirty. $128.00 at my local Euro Shop. Issue solved.

Yeah, it's the other gasket that you should have changed at the same time. CCT Gasket

CCT and valve cover gaskets are notorious for oil leaking down the side of the engine.

See the black cylinder just above the red circled bolt on the right? That's the actuator. The four circled bolts remove the cam positioner. Pic came from Matt Devo's DIY: Clicky click

The half-moon plug that sits under the gasket (comes as part of the CCT gasket kit) is the cause of most of the oil leak. If you look at the back of the head with a mirror and flashlight, you should see that oil has been running out of that opening:

*Note - pictured is the version of the CCT without the black solenoid that yours will have. But it is the same gasket situation, same half-moon plug and such. Note the 3 black bolts at the top - that will give a good reference to the photo that oldguy posted.

As usual it's OldGuy to the rescue! He is pretty much the shit on AZ. OP, as farr as the tools required it looks to be nothing more than a torx bit. OldGuy probably knows the necessary size to that as well.

As for special tools, those black bolts are T30 torx. And you will also need the VW/Audi Cam Chain Tensioner tool (tool #3366):

    http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/Cam_...ool/ES1306818/

You can also get them on ebay for around $12. I have one that I loan out to forum members. You just cover the shipping, 2 bucks each way (in the US). You *can* get it done without the tool, but IMHO it is tricky enough with the tool, let alone without it.

Anyone happen to know the torque specs on those 4 tensioner bolts?

I did my valve cover over the summer and forgot about the tensioner gasket...now it's leaking. grrrrrrr.....the oil runs right along the lip of the head and drips down onto the cat. Peeeyew.

I know it has been quite a while since this thread was active but I have a quick question. I am having the same oil leak issue on the rear of my 1.8t engine. Is there any chance that the CCT can break and leak the oil or is the leak pretty much always from the gaskets? Thanks for the help.

Leak is from the gasket. If the CCT broke, you would have a bigger issue on your hands.
