    2008 Audi A6 Brake Pads.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey Guys, I have a 08 Audi A6 and today the brake pads light came on ... I have never changed the brake pads since I got the vehicle. Can you recommend any decent brake pads that are similar quality to the OEM ones... I'm not looking to spend a fortune but at the same time I want to be able to stop the vehicle without hurting anyone!

Also after changing the brake pads, does the light go away automatically or does it require resetting via VAGCOM?

    Thanks

    FC

OEM or go with Akebono pads for less dust with about the same initial bite/feel of OEM. Not sure about the light, I know it goes out on my wife's BMW after changing pads with new sensors.

I think there is a DIY on Audiworld.

If you're doing the fronts you don't need vagcom to retract the calipers. But On the rears you will. Or atleast on mine I did. My rear are those Magnetic ones so the dealer computer was the only one that could retract em.

I wouldnt go with oem... I just upgraded to HAWK HPS and their 1000x better than OEM. then again, I like being able to brake fast, I also tracked mine

Where did you buy the brake pads? Also how much did you pay for them?
I am planning to replace front and rear brake pads. I really don't want to go to the dealer!!! I HATE the Dealer.

Ebay, I bought HAWK HPS Pads, rears for $50 shipped.
I havnt done the front because their just not ready. Though I can't wait to do it.

I also bought Slotted rotors for the rear when I did the pads. I'll buy slotted rotors for the front too when I upgrade the pads.

Well, I was lucky enuf to have a friend who works at a VW dealer as a mechanic and brought the computer home.

you'll need vagcom to retract the rear calipers.

Where in Brooklyn do you live? I live in Franklin Square (exit 15 ss pkwy). I have vag-com and can assist. New pads in front will turn off brake light immediately. Rear pads are different story. You MUST have vag-com to retract piston on parking brake.

I bought the front and rear Hawk HPS for $135. Sounds reasonable, right?

do you have the steps to retract with the rear caliper with Vagcom?

Also, does anybody know which brake rotor size comes standard with the sline? I see two sizes for the brake pads.

I don't believe it is based on trim level, but more on engine size. The 4.2 and the 3.0t run the larger rotors (347mm front ans 330 rear).

You will need a vag-com to do so. People have done it without one but I HIGHLY suggest borrowing a vag-com or purchasing your own.

    Here's the instructions:
    Open Rear Parking Brake

    Prerequisites:

Connect a battery charger as per repair manual. See Special Notes
Cycle the Parking Brake ON, then OFF first.

    [Select]
    [53 - Parking Brake]
    [Basic Settings - 04]
    Group 007
    [Go!]
    Activate the Basic Setting.
    [ON/OFF/Next]
The brake calipers will then open, allowing the pads to be changed.
    [Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

    Turn ignition off.

It is normal for the LED in the parking brake switch and the warning lamp in the instrument cluster to blink rapidly at this point.

The caliper pistons do not move back into the caliper, this is normal.
    Close Rear Parking Brake

    Prerequisites:

Connect a battery charger as per repair manual. See Special Notes

    [Select]
    [53 - Parking Brake]
    [Basic Settings - 04]
    Group 006
    [Go!]
    Activate the Basic Setting.
    [ON/OFF/Next]
The brake calipers will then close.
    [Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

The LED in the parking brake switch and the warning lamp in the instrument cluster will probably continue to blink rapidly. This should stop after cycling the Parking Brake ON, then OFF again.
    Function Test

    Prerequisites:

Cycle the Parking Brake ON, then OFF first.

    [Select]
    [53 - Parking Brake]
    [Basic Settings - 04]
    Group 010
    [Go!]
    Activate the Basic Setting.
    [ON/OFF/Next]
The brake pads are now opening and closing 3 times.
Wait 30 seconds after the the brakes stop making noise.
    [Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

Hello, found your topic on google. I'm in need of a replacement brake pads and found those, which look really OK and I was thinking of getting them cheaper from poland (These are alcon brake pads) but is it a good solution? Shipping from eu would probably take a while, so...

Thank you very much for the info. I found a similar info on Ross tech but its missing some of the steps you gave me.

I jordered the Akebonos front and rears from ECS and I should be replacing the pads this weekend.

I have Hawk HPS on my A4.

But been happier with the EBC reds all around on our A6. A lot less dust but better bite than the HPS. Previous to HPS, I had Axxis Ultimates which were a notch behind HP+. Those were dusty but bite hard. HP+ are even more dusty and tend to squeal.

In any case, I hear good reviews with the Akebono's. I'm sure they will bite like stock but have less dust.

i used my milwaukee 12v battery from my m12 drills, unplugged the caliper motor and jumped it via some wire jigging,i left them retracted and ofcourse parking brake lights and warnings went crazy but all i did was apply the electric parking brake and then remove the parking brake and they went back to normal and warnings came off. Ofcourse figuring out which way is retract and which way applies the caliper piston is the hard part. Right back atcha audi. Aint getting me with that vagcom stuff for maintenance lol

Did you just revive a 5 yr old thread?

    lol

Just FYI guys, you no longer need vagcom for the rear brake release. There's an app for your phone now that will do it over bluetooth to a OBD2 tongle. Really awesome!

It's called Carista, I love it and all the extra features it offers.

Obviously im as super active member, so im not spamming this product or anything. I paid for it, and it was worth it. It even read modules and stuff in my car that were having issues.

I just replaced the rotors and pads on the A6 and did a similar thing with the rear as BKZC6 did. But I bet this tool is a hell of a lot easier.

Seems pretty inexpensive too for all that cool diagnostic capability as well as the cool custom set ups it looks like you can put together. I think I will grab me one of these soon.

Thanks for sending that out JPJ. BTW I absolutely love the color of your car. Love my IBIS white, but if there was one of them red ones available......
