what is the best clutch to put in my stage 3 s4 - suggestions PLEASE

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
my luck, but my clutch just started slipping pretty bad couple days ago.

i dont know what is the best clutch to put in

my s4 is stage 3, and it had the stock clutch (lmao sad i know, but i just bought my s4 2 weeks ago like that).

Please tell me all your suggestions for the best clutch to put in

BTW, i am not looking for an aggressive clutch at all.. i want everything but a STIFF and difficult clutch.. something very easy that will handle the power and still be a smooth ride.

    thanks in advance guys!!

    Clutchmasters Stage 4 FX400 6 Puck W/ Steel LWFW.

I knew your clutch felt funny when you came by the shop few days ago. If you remember I told you it didn't feel right. Give me a call we'll work something out.

I'd like to keep my car.

Another for the FX-400 6 puck w/ LWFW. Minimal chatter with that setup, not to mention it will be able to hold all of your power plus some.

Not to thread jack, (but since we're on the subject) I have sitting in my room a new rs4 pressure plate and kevlar street clutch (was going to resurface the dual mass flywheel - on my allroad) Will this hold a set of RS6's waiting to go in the car?

If i have to sell 1 or the other to get the FX400, I guess I'll have to do that before the install. Not looking forward to 700-900 for the clutchmasters, but I want something that's going to last, so might as well spend the money now.

edit... not looking at getting a lwfw. for my setup. Isn't that what causes the chatter? or is it the crazy grip from a 4puck?

man I feel really good now about buying my FX400 5K miles ago and now going stage 3...

I personally would have to ask what kind of driving do you do? The FX400 is a great clutch for everyday use. The chatter is a bit annoying but easily ignored.

i dont launch at all.. and my driving is not THAT aggressive.. but keep in mind, it is a stage 3 so i do drive a little hard here and there, but overall, i drive in a everyday pace. im looking for something that is very smooth, and easy to gear in. everything but stiff, and aggressive.

Just weld the output flange to the trans input shaft. A clutch is a crutch.

I run JHM's Stage 4 Clutch and LWFW combo. Holds anything you are going to throw at it and is soft pedal pressure like stock. Here is a link to my review:

My clutchmasters fx300 just started slipping on me. I've started researching it and got it down to two either clutchmaster fx400 or the Spec stage 3+.

I picked up rs4 clutch just because I heard sooooo many mixed opinions on all clutches, but I have to say clutchmasters gets the most votes. I skipped them because I thought i will need a new flywheel. VAST clutches needs their FW resurface that includes modification in order to fit that clutch, which is trouble some IMO. VAST ones I have heard sucks anyways. SPEC ones are not the best out there either, some people cant even run them for some reason. I been looking for a new clutch myself and I narrowed down to:

    clutchmasters or southbend

Southbend stg3 endurance is the best I have driven. Very nice engagement and the pedal effort is close to stock, maybe a tad lighter.

What is your opinion on the rs4 clutch? How does it perform? Is it a smooth and easy ride and a breeze to shift into gears? I'm stuck between the rs4 clutch and fx400.. Which do you all believe is less stiffer?

since you're on long island I would highly recommend you check out falcon clutches in bayshore? (IIRC) I just put one of his clutches in on my FT car. It feels exactly like stock and will definitely hold stage 3 power, and to boot its a few bucks cheaper than the CM or SB options. Very reliable shop and he had my new clutch built and flywheel resurfaced by the next day!!!

I have a ClutchNet in my 200 and loved it at first. Halfway through the season it started slipping on a launch though. Either I have just overpowered it or they die that quick.... I have the red pressure plate and 6 puck disk which is one of their higher rated clutch setups. They DO NOT respond to emails either....

I'll be putting a South Bend in it when I get around to it.

I run an OEM Rs4 in my nogaro car (stage II+ for now) and a VAST stage III in my wagon (Stage 3/w meth) and I love both clutches. I never launch my cars and all I care about is drivability....both clutches fit the criteria. You're welcome to come to NJ and drive the nogaro (RS4) anytime.

One import step is missing from the video IMO. It's good to get all the slack out of your drivetrain prior to a launch. I hold the brake and ride the clutch to take up all the slack. This will help avoid the gears from having to take up the little bit of slack that could potentially shear them.

I want to make note, our gears are VERY strong (shear strength anyway) and I got this from friends in the Honda world. It's just one extra precautionary thing that I do.

Which they haven't offered since 2009. So you Lose.
At the start of 2010 they changed the lineup so that it is just Stage 1-4 with different levels for stage 2-4.

Who in the world is sheering 1st gear with a 01E? I don't see the point of pulling the E-Brake other then to keep the car from rolling forward if using a 2 step sitting at a set rpm.

My avant has an RS4 clutch in it and Noggy has fx400. I'm actually scared to launch the avant in fear of the not so strong clutch. My friend had the rs4 clutch and drove the piss out of his car and after like 10k his clutch began to slip.

I've drag'd drove my car hard and still feels the same as new! I used to do a lot of clutch drumping but this. Out h has been the best so far.
As for which one is more easy to drive or stock feeling: they are both really the same. The rs4 is closer to stock but cm feels. Dry similar

    Amazing blind loyalty...

How do you know it will "hold anything you are going to throw at it" ?

How long have you had the clutch, how many miles, how much abuse and track time has it seen? You make some pretty lofty claims without any proof what so ever... From what I've read your B5 S4 has been broken more then it has been driven.

This is not an attack against you, but rather a request for more proof for a pretty sensitive subject for most.

I'm not if anyone has actually sheared a gear but I can tell you first hand that they can and will get pitted on the input shaft. And after spending $900 on just the shaft, I will continue to preload my drivetrain prior to a launch. I don't use the ebrake or leave any brake on at all. I just put it into gear and let the clutch out slowly to take up the slack.

Taking up the slack is normal by getting the clutch up just before the car wants to creep forward. That is different then actually preloading the engine and driveline.

I've drag'd drove my car hard and still feels the same as new! I used to do a lot of clutch drumping but this. Out h has been the best so far.
As for which one is more easy to drive or stock feeling: they are both really the same. The rs4 is closer to stock but cm feels. Dry similar

If you do decide to go with an RS4 pressure plate, please consider at least using a different disc. The RS4 PP with the SPEC 3+ disc can hold Stage 3 power, launches, etc. It's not as robust an powerful as using a real pressure plate and you still have the SAC mechanism, but this is actually what I am running in my GT car right now. Drives like a stock RS4 clutch, holds way way way more power. The stock RS4 disc is just organic materal on a flimsy disc. Launching or not, 400+ ft/lbs of torque is going to wear that out.

Even a Stage 1 or Stage 2+ disc would be worlds better.
