    Can't check oil level on MMI

    Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    So, for some reason, I can't check my oil level on MMI. Every time I try to, I get the message that the car must be on for approximately two minute and the engine warm, then the car needs to be off. If I turn the car completely off, it tells me the ignition has to be on, if I turn the ignition on, I get the first message.

    Guess I need to go to the dealer.

    Did you just add oil? I know this message popped up, a few weeks back for me, after I had to add a quart.

    Try resetting the MMI. It's a long shot, but it may work.

    Hey Kevin,
    The wife and I get the same message in both of our cars once in a while. Usually after I've added oil. I would give it a day or so, try again whenever you start the car. If it continues then you're right, maybe a trip to Stevens Creek.

    I don't know if mine is different for any reason (3G MMI/Nav) but I can check it after driving for a bit while the car is still on. I just did it today at a stop light leaving work after about 4 or 5 min of driving. Have you attempted to read it while the car was on after driving for a bit? Sounds kind of strange to say based on what you said above, but may be worth a shot? Good luck!

    I'm pretty sure checking it while driving is fairly inaccurate so it wouldn't do any good.

    Absolutely correct - the oil needs to drain back into the crankcase to get an accurate reading. If the oil is circulating through the engine, the reading means nothing.

    I tried it in the parking lot at the grocery store and in my drive way. Even let the car sit 30 minutes, went back out and let it idle for 5 min and tried again, but the MMI reset fixed it.

    Alternatively you can open up your bonnet, power up the car (no need to run the engine) click the side 'up/down' button of wiper stalk. You should see the oil level display in the MFD, this method work immediately after top up of engine oil no need to wait for MMI to refresh which may take one day.

    I also have the "dipstick mod" just for this type of thing and used that.

    I have a 2009 A4, and the oil level MMI was working perfectly - until I was poking around the engine bay and opened the oil lid, closed it. Didn't do anything else. Now I get this message. Tried resetting MMI (Pressing setup + control knob + top right). Tried reading MMI with hood opened.

    Still getting the same odd message: "Oil Level display available after approximately 2 minutes. The engine must warm and must be switched off."

    Does it need to wait a few days before reset of MMI registers?

    ^^^ You need to wait a couple of days after you close the hood, especially if you have the stage I oil consumption fix. They made the ECU software more picky.
