Sprung clutch VS Dual Mass flywheel?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I'm reading up on clutches for my GT28RS eliminator kit. I know that I need to do it once + do it right.

I see all these problems with clutchmaster clutches.

So I'm thinking of a trusted brand (at least on my rx7) ACT. But the one I would prefer is a 6 puck un-sprung clutch.

I'm new to this whole dual mass flywheel thing. What is the difference between that and a sprung clutch? If I go with the 6 puck un-sprung, will I have all the same issues that I would with a 'normal' flywheel?

This car is a daily drive, 3 year old hauler. So it being comfortable is important.

A Dual mass flywheel is not even the same part as the clutch disc your talking about.

A dual mass if what vw/audi uses to make the clutch egagement smoother.

Most everybody switchs to a single mass(normal) flywheel.

Dual mass is usually heavier and a prone to go bad

and do not get a Un-sprung clutch. if you want to daily the car comfortable, switch to single mass flywheel, or just buy the complete clutchmasters kit.

Problems with Clutch Masters? Ive seen and personally experienced problems with SouthBend...

If its "comfort" you want keep the DMFW!

Run a stage 3 clutch from Spec or Clutch masters 6 puck FX400.(BTDT!) Because they all have nearly the same Sach Sport higher clamping pressure plate.

If comfort is not a real concern run the 240mm(BTDT!) versions...

The DMFW is primarily designed to dampen drive line virbations...especially on the 6-speed quattros.

A spring clutch disk will dampen the clutch engaugement shock, verses a non spring disk.

Currently I have on my 2004 USP is Clutch Masters 240mm Single Mass Flywheel with their FX200 kevlar disk. So far all is well!

Past clutchs(all DIY installed) Spec 240mm Stage 2+ with SMFW. SouthBend with OE DMFW. Spec Stage 2+ with OE DMFW.

    FYI, B6 Audi A4 1.8t has 228mm clutch....B7-B7 Audi A4 1.8 and 2.0 have 240mm clutch(OE) so Audi seen the wisdom of the 240mm verses the 228 on the 1.8!

Well your not going to see anyone having issues with a ACT clutch on their A4 because there might be a whole 1 or 2 people that went with that clutch setup. Might be why ACT only offers 2 different disk options.

You cant run a 6 puck(sprung or unsprung) on the stock dual mass flywheel, which is why companies offer a full face unsprung disk with 8 ceramic pads instead of a puck disk when using the dual mass flywheel.

This is exactly what I was trying to figure out. Thanks. Also makes sense why the audi is way more easy to drive than my 7.

Remind me what BTDT means? Big turbo something?

So to get a 240mm clutch I need a different flywheel correct? What dual mass would work with that?

    Been There Done That

The B6 A4 OE clutch is 228mm DMFW. The 240mm clutch for the B6 is a single mass flywheel. To date I dont know of anyone who makes a 240mm DMFW for the B6....

I think I meant south bend. They seem to have problems? I'm really not sure anymore. I'm at that overload point where I've seen too much + can't remember what is what.

So I have 3 possible choices for my GTRS eliminator.

    ECS RA4 stage 2
    http://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B6_A4-...Clutch/ES5489/

I like this because it comes with everything + the idea that it's a stock clutch from another car that will hold the power I'll be making and also will probably be as reliable as the stock clutch.

    Sachs stage II
    http://www.awe-tuning.com/products/a...-a4stage2.html

This looks like a pretty decent kit. It says it will hold 300 ft/lbs. But I'll need a new flywheel which is almost another $300. Plus other stuff. I plan on getting an FMIC from them as well so maybe they'd cut me a bit of a deal?

Then there's the 228mm FX400 6 puck which everyone seems to love.
It's about at the top of my price range as well.

Let me know what you would go with.
Does anyone happen to know if the 228mm FX400 will work with the stock DMFW?

Yes but only the full face 8 pad (HDCBL-R) ridged disk will work.

    Looks like this.

They don't last nearly as long as a 6 puck.
