He wants to do it without a PC so I was wondering how he would have the tablet connected to his tv and still have a remote? In the media server WD drive situation for instance.

Ahh. OK. So you connect your ASUS up to the tv and use your phone as the remote. So what's hosting your media on your network?

ah, in that instance he'd have to get off his lazy ass and walk the extra steps to hit pause on his movie before he walks to get popcorn/hit the bathroom.

I think there's a thread for this sort of problem. lol

I'd look into the boxee box or roku box. I don't know enough about them though because I usually just connect my macbook via mini-display to hdmi and control it with my cell.

there are remotes sold for pc usage if he was going to go with htpc, but if cheaper is the goal then htpc is not the right way... htpc would probably be the most expensive option... (also the most powerful one)

Small HTPC running XBMC. It can host the files or pull it over a network storage (that your main or your tv computer shares) both can be remote controlled with a tablet.

Do it right, or do it twice. I've been toying with this idea for a while. All my storage is upstairs, and my TV is downstairs.

There's no way to do HD without a real computer. I tried WDTV, but it sucked - the rendering was garbage compared to a real machine sitting in as an HTPC. There are options out there that uses custom-built chips to decode HD, but you're better off getting a mac mini. A mac mini or a Transformer/Prime can give you internet access and everything that comes with it.

The other option is to Reverse the setup. Have all the media on the TV side, and stream it from the computer upstairs. This is a good box to do it with: http://www.popcornhour.com/

I have to disagree with that part. I have a Boxee Box and a 500GB NAS connected 1080P to a 55" LED tv and it works awesome. No pc needed.

I was in the same boat as Marty in that I wanted streaming functionality without an additional PC.

do you watch full blue ray files(not rips)? if so how is it?

ive seen a few players "lag" under heavy fast pace action scenes... on the other hand my dad has a LG BD590 player on a 55 samsung led and it handles what ever i threw at it... so i wont knock down all players out there, but again if money was not an issue i would go with an htpc any day of the week, the things a dedicated computer can do compared to a player its just not comparable.

I hear ya but his primary stipulation was that he didn't want a pc.

I have a bunch of 1080p mkv files that play and look perfect through my TV.

Ah yes. I did hear good things about BOXEE. I used to run either XBMC or BOXEE on the old Powerbook I parked for media downstairs, but it didn't do very well for HD - probably because that laptop's ancient.

The thing is, unless he knows for sure he wants the BOXEE way of doing things, then it's better to have a proper PC. This way you can switch between all the flavours.

mac mini previous gen which still has a DVD drive + a 3TB external for storage... + plex server on the mac mini is the best way to go imo.

I love iTunes, the problem is that it works so damn well inside its own ecosystem. You have to use Their store and buy fully into their model to really appreciate it. I love the idea of having all my content available everywhere, but not so easy when it's not bought from the iTunes Store. iTunes Match is a nice feature to bridge that gap.

I do this in my man cave, minus the wireless mouse/keyboard.

I'm not saying that I download movie torrents illegally but I do download TV show torrents such as Homeland, Boardwalk Empire, Walking Dead, etc in 720 or 1080p, connect to my 50" Bravia via HDMI then press play on the DivX or VLC video player.

Apple TV interfaces nicely and if I didn't already have lots of my own music, TV shows, and movies, this would be 'the thing to do'.

I hate having to run everything through itunes. It reminds me of catholicism.

There's Apple Lossless for some stuff, but I think it cost more. And they 'claim' AAC 256 is better than mp3 256.

I use my PS3 to stream basically anything. It automatically finds anything in my Windows 7 movies, music, or pictures folder. I believe Windows Media Center on XP can do it as well. It also gives me the option of transferring it to the PS3 HDD wirelessly or I can just plug in a USB stick with anything I want on it. I think if I set it up properly I could even use a network Hard Drive to save stuff to and stream from that on the PS3.

The other advantage is the remote uses bluetooth so it doesn't have to be line of site, this works great with a projector.

    ^PS3 supposedly works very well.

My Dad got me a new Wireless N router for Christmas. Until today I was using Wireless G. The Boxee and my NAS were physically connected to the router so that was never an issue. Streaming 1080p to my Samsung laptop was a problem on G though. Problem solved with N.

So after my wife and son went to sleep I decided to perform a little experiment. There was an older HP laptop at the house that I don't use anymore, 2ghz 6gb ram 250gb hdd, so I wiped it, loaded Windows 7 Ultimate on it as well as xbmc, and hooked it up to the 42" Samsung plasma in my son's play room. It works well but the laptop only has s video, no hdmi. That being said, for kids shows on Netflix and local files I have, it's fine. I may order an external video card for it with a hdmi out.

It needs a remote though. I downloaded gmote but haven't played with it much. It seems kind of shitty but I'll see if I can get it to work well.

Wall-E blu ray rip mkv file plays perfectly from my nas over wireless n.

Other than the ugly wire hanging down, this works fine. If this becomes permanent I'll hide it like the rest of the wires. Without a great remote though, it's worth using a Boxee Box or a PS3 instead of this.

I think if I set it up properly I could even use a network Hard Drive to save stuff to and stream from that on the PS3.

The other advantage is the remote uses bluetooth so it doesn't have to be line of site, this works great with a projector.
ps3 was awesome till they implemented Cinavia and fucked with everyones life... and it seems like the existing workarounds dont work for everyone... bt i havent really read too much on it since i can watch my movies on other devices

    ^Ooooh fancy.

What's a good Android app that will let me stream audio and video content from my upnp nas to my Motorola Xoom?
