    Found a '98 1.8T Quattro for sale, $2900

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm looking for some advice on what might be a very random purchase. I have been shopping for fun project car for months now - I'm in no rush. I love the Nissan 300zx TT and I had my heart set on it for a while but I just don't think I'm ready to spend that kind of money. Anyway, I was browsing some ad's and came across a very clean looking A4 1.8T. Looks completely stock, tons of maintenance records, same owner for past 10 years, timing belt changed. has 95k miles on it. Having very little knowledge of these cars (only what I have read over the past 24 hours) I was hoping I could get some help.

    1. Based on the info I gave does it seem like a really good deal? Or is this a pretty average price?
    2. I've been in the market for something relatively fast, am I way off on this one? I am willing to put an extra 2-3k into the car to make it quick (chip, exhaust, ???, you tell me). Or should I just forget about it for that kind of money?
    3. How is insurance on these cars? not looking for exact numbers, just wondering if it is relatively low or high.

    Thanks!

Insurance is relatively low. They dont get stolen and they are not worth crazy amounts.

That is a good price in my area for that car. I would buy it. Is that 2900 CAN or dollars?

Are you sure its quattro? I dont see a quattro badge on the front and I dont see a quattro logo on the right of the dash.

The price is good to me, i picked mine up for 4k with 140k miles. These cars are slooooow. but with 2-3k invested into them youll have about 350chp with the proper turbo upgrade/tune. and lastly, insurance is cheap. i'm 19 and i only pay about 100 a month.

Exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. His ad definitely says quattro, right in the title. What is a surefire way for me to tell the difference when I check it out tomorrow? also it's $2900 CAN

that's a good deal for sure. But these cars are slow as hell so If its just a project car that you want to be fast as fuck id say your looking at the wrong engine. it takes about 8-10k before you feel comfortable racing other cars. most big turbo fully build audi 1.8's make between 400-500hp. which is very low numbers compared to other built enthusiast cars like the 300zx, 240 and most honda motors, bla bla, someones going to hate me on this.

I'm just about done building my gt3076r E85 a4. I spent 5k on the car and then about 8k in the build, and I will probably see 400-420hp. I am wishing I went with a 300zx or something jap hahaha fail.

b5s4's make great power with minimal bolt on's, but seem to require a lot of maintenance at first. Once you replace all the iffy stuff they seem to be fine though. stage 3 S4's go for around 10-12k now I think??

I wouldn't say I'm aiming for fast as fuck, just a first car for me to work on and have fun with. If I could safely get 250-300hp for under $3k I would be very happy. I'm still struggling with the costs of modding, I'd love to do a turbo upgrade, but I have no idea how much the entire thing will cost me. And I'd love an s4 but it's way out of my price range.

You are not going to get 350chp for $2,000-3000. I mean you can, but that price does not include supporting mods (ie exhaust, suspension, mounts, etc). Try something like $3,000-5,000 for a proper setup, and that is the used parts price mixed with a few brand new items. I actually know someone with a plug and play GT2871R eliminator kit he wants to get rid of. I never asked him on pricing though. You would need to source the tune yourself, though. And not sure on the intercooler part.

Stock, that car is 150bhp. An ECU flash will add 30-35 more chp, and you should add an exhaust onto that to free up some ponies. A complete bolt on setup will bring the car to roughly 200-215chp if you are lucky (that is how it is for the AWM, but that car has 20 more ponies stock).

Mods for these cars are not cheap, and they will def have their issues. So, keep that in mind. Not trying to deter you from your purchase at all, because I adore my vehicle. And unless you can wrench or like to fix things yourself, this car can get rather expensive to maintain. Just stating the facts.

But that is def a good deal. I am also skeptical of it being Quattro, even though the ad stated it is Quattro. East way to check is to lay on the ground and see if the rear wheels/hub has axles going to the rear differential. If it has axles on the rear period, then it is a Quattro.

you can go K04 on that 98 (AEB engine code) for pretty cheap. still wont be really fast, but it would feel really good compared to stock and everything you need to go k04 you can probably find used on this forum right now for under 2k.
I think all thats really needed is the:
ecu: pc16? or other k04 files
    k04 turbo
    injectors, 440cc I think?
    MAF?
    FPR

and then things you should have, but don't realllyyy need right away.

    FMIC
    full exhaust

I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to going k04, but im sure someone will chime in if you go that route sometime.

Yea, I've been looking at a k04 upgrade. Anyways, thanks for all the help I'll just have to give it a test drive tomorrow and see where I stand.

I would suggest the Frankenturbo...and be the test rabbit for running it on a GT28R tune.

If you are digging on Audis, don't be afraid to look at a 92-96 Audi S4 or S6. The inline 5 motor is a beast and can easily last to 250K. There are a lot of people who tune them. Not so much on this forum. But if you head over to motorgeek or the 034 forums you can learn about them there. I had a 95 S6 at one time and that was a great car.

Look under the rear for axles. Look under the center for a driveshaft and a rear differential.

If it doesnt have quattro, offer him 2k and find some other small thing wrong with it.
