What color is the coolant in the reservoir?
    Probably a bad coolant flange.

i have a feeling the previous owner put PEAK or some other green coolant in it
flush whatever might remain of your coolant and fill with the right G12 mixture first before you go buying parts
here's a DIY if you need help with that: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...h-Your-Coolant.

as far as your leak, what is your car? 1.8T, 2.8?

Just use distilled water in the reservoir to help diagnose. Chances are, if the reservoir is empty, and you didn't know what was in there before, then it probably is the green stuff.

    I personally run G5.

You would take it to a place for A/C service and pay them cash dollars to fix it...basically. They have special tools to pinpoint refrigerant leaks, and more special tools to properly evacuate the system, repair it, and refill it.

If you want to save money and do the part-changing yourself, you can take it there, have them find the leak and evacuate the refrigerant. Then take the car home and change out the leaky part yourself (probably the condenser or compressor). Return to the shop for a refrigerant refill.

I'm kind of wondering how you are leaking refrigerant oil near the axle, though. That's kind of odd. The common leaks are at the condenser (from rock damage, etc), compressor itself, or various line fittings/o-rings. There's not any A/C stuff that runs very near to the axles or transmission.
