    Worth Buying a 2006 Audi A6 w/ High Mileage?

    Hello Audizine Community,
I have been a guest on these forums for years, however this is my first time posting on the site. I created this account for some insight on an upcoming purchasing, hopefully someone with the same vehicle or with better knowledge may be able to assist me with this...

A friend of mine is selling his 2006 Audi A6 3.2L for a fairly reasonable price ($6,000 Canadian), however the car is already at 220,000 KM's. My question to you, is do you think it is worth purchasing a luxury vehicle with such high mileage? Also, how long do you expect the engine to last? The vehicle has been regularly maintained at the Agincourt Autohaus Inc. in Toronto, and also has a rebuilt engine circa 2010. I realize the price is almost 10x less than what it was originally, however I'm not looking to incur any headaches in the long run. I will be taking it to my regular mechanic's garage for a thorough inspection within the coming week. If there are any Audi A6 owners that have comfortably run over 200,000 KM's, any advice or suggestions are more than welcome.

Some information on myself: I am a 23 year old student in Toronto, graduating next year and still searching for a career. Essentially not trying to add more debt to student loans with expensive repairs in the future.

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to being an active in the community,
    C

    Welcome!!!!

I purchased an 2007 Audi A6 in March with 103,000 miles. It is an amazing car and works well for me. I put about 5,000 miles on it a year because I have a Porsche that gets miles during the summer. I would highly recommend buying the car if Carfax checks out and also if you have a Pre Purchase Inspection by someone that works with a lot of Audis.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the welcome, it definitely is an amazing car and handles great too. I just got back from my mechanic and the body, transmission, suspension are all in good condition. In my case, the A6 would be my daily driver, to and from work and not much else. Might just pull the trigger on this sale by the weekend...

Thanks for the response JPJ, is that 150,000 kilometers or miles? If it's miles, I believe that converts to approximately 240,000 kilometers (we use KM's in Canada BTW). Also, when you say "..not sure, never know." do you mean that the vehicle is unreliable or are you unsure that it will last that long?

I see that you have the exact same vehicle as well, so any help would be appreciated. I just got back from checking out the car and my mechanic says that it's in good condition. What are you predictions/estimations as to how long the engine/electronics will last?

If you are dealing in miles on your end, the 3.2 A6 I'm looking at is at approximately 135,000 miles.

I live in Collingwood and bought me A6 2.7 6 speed with 220,000kms and its a fantastic car.

One issue to check is the status of the front suispension arms, noisy when worn and expensive to replace ($1500) plus the arm kit.
Contact me if you want more detailed help...I have had two similar A6 cars and have a great used part source

I would buy the car, but maybe for a little less money depending on whether the suspension has been done or not

My question is if your mechanic is an Audi mechanic? Reason I ask is an Audi mechanic will know what to look for and what normally goes wrong as he works on these cars daily. The mechanic down the road works on many cars of different makes and models. While he may be good, lord know mine is, he still won't know what to look for to keep you from the "gotcha's" that can happen.

It might be worth taking it to an Audi dealer and letting them put the car through a CPO inspection. The few bucks spent now could save you a lot down the road, keep you away from the "gotcha's" and you will know what is going to be going bad within the next few months.

Thanks Hotshoe, if I may ask; what is the current mileage on your A6 and have you encountered any mechanical/electrical problems after nearing 250K?

PS - I may take you up on that offer for the used parts. If all goes according to plan I should have the A6 by years end and taking it up to Blue Mountain for New Years.

To be honest, he's just a generic mechanic that I've been going to for years, I doubt he specializes in German vehicles. After taking the vehicle to my mechanic he really didn't go in to any details, just told me that the car was "good to go" and to enjoy it. I'm glad you brought that to my attention though, as I recall having a friend in college that was working as a mechanic for Audi at the time.. might have to give him a call.

I did a bit of research on CPO inspections and i'm not sure if I can justify $2K on an inspection, considering it's a 1/3 of the price for the vehicle. In your opinion, are these cars made to last 300K - 400K? If so, then perhaps the CPO inspection is not that bad of a deal. I would just hate to hand over the cash, only to have the vehicle die in a years time. Do you think a Carfax report would suffice?

I appreciate everyone that has welcomed me to the forums so far and provided me with their advice.. thanks again!

Yeah, the CPO inspection might not be worth it but to have an Audi shop give it the once over is still a good idea I believe. My 2002 A4 had 187K on her when I traded her in. Was still running strong. As long at you keep up the maintenance she should last you a while. The car is not really that old.
