    autozone coil packs?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
After getting my revo tune a few months back one of coil packs failed instantly so I grabbed one at local autozone. They're duralast brand, and $33 each. With a metal shank, I don't think they're prone to fail like some have experienced with the plastic coils. Are there any down falls to these parts store coil packs? Looking to possibly buy 3 more to match.

probably not too relevant, but i put a set of autozone coilpacks in a 24v vr6 tonight, very smooth by comparison to old oem. around 20 bucks a piece.

I ran one as a spare a while back. Why not do the same and stick with oem, or go with the fsi upgrade?

IMO: In a emergency situation is the only way I'll ever buy them again. If I recall correctly they only last about 2k miles.

We've had problems with aftermarket coil packs at our shop. We never sell them, but sometimes customers bring their own parts. We've had "brand new" parts store coil packs that just don't work. We've also had ones that work fine, but every single one throws a code for some type of circuit problem. For customer cars, we generally replace with the very reliable japanese coil packs (Hitachi 115E), but since the campaign replacement for 2001+ cars, we have just been sending them to the dealer for the free Italian ones.

Never had a problem with aftermarket coils.

Before Audi actually 'fessed up and had the coilpack recall, I simply bought one lifetime warranty aftermarket coil and warrantied it as necessary.

I bought 2 CPs from Advance Auto like 2 or 3 years ago, and they quit working in less than an hour. I can't remember what brand they were, I want to say Bremi? I never tried Duralast CPs

Yeah, I'm thinking the ones we had the most trouble with were BREMI as well. Which is interesting, because they were the OE manufacturer for all those coil packs that got recalled!

Autozone coil packs should be a last decision. The factory ones arent that much more and even factory ones will go out with ecu tuned cars. Im sure they have a good warranty on them like most parts that they sell but its much more a hassle than anything, wont hurt to try if you really need to

What revision coilpacks do you have then? The D revision ones they install under recall shouldn't be failing very often, and if they do, the dealer should replace them again at no charge

just throwing this out there, I have a brand new set of INA MKVI CP adapters, still in the sealed bags. I'll let them go cheap.

They put mine it for free while I waited. I think there was some labor on the receipt, but it was all no charge/warranty work. I was really hoping to leave the car there because when I made the appointment they told me I'd be "shuttled" to and from work. I was hoping this was going to be a personal shuttle in a new A4, but they told me to wait 10 minutes while they threw the coils in.

On a side note, I had actually already replaced the coils myself less than a year prior. To get the free ones I just threw in some junk ones that barely worked and limped to the dealership - couldn't get into boost without it misfiring. I did this because they will not give you the oil coils back. I asked and they said absolutely not, even for spares.

Mine had a set replaced by audi before I got the car (like 2006 or 2007-ish), then again in 2011. I actually called Audi of America in 2009 about the coil packs that were presently failing on me and they said the car already got a replacement set under some kind of recall and I was out of luck. So I bought entire set of "R" coils to replace the crap "L" coils. Then in 2011 I got a full set of "D" coils under the campaign. Then after all of that I put in red FSI coils!

So that's a Maybe. I think you can only get 1 set per actual recall. In my case it was 2 separate recalls I believe.

Didnt the most recent recall only happen a year ago or so anyways? So you should be entitled to a new set of coils if they were done two years ago

Yeah, the recall based on the "D" coils is pretty recent. I'd give AoA a call and they can see if you're eligible. I find they are much more helpful than my local dealer for that type of stuff. When you go in for the recall, make SURE you have hard fault misfire codes set for at least 2 cylinders. That will ensure you get a full set instead of just 1 coil. And clean out the plug holes so they can't blame it on that.

Why buy a $33 aftermarket coil of unknown quality when you can get OE "D" revision coils from the dealer for $21 retail?
