35% Tint on my A5 in NNJ/NYC area good/bad idea?!?

    Hey Guys,

I've been wanting to tint my car for some time now, but based on my past experience with tints Im not really sure with what I can get away with in this area (North Jersey/NYC). My first car was a green civic/dark gray interior and I had 15% tints on it (I know I know I was asking for it lol) and as you would have guessed I did get pulled over twice for it.

I have a ibis white a5/black interior and I was thinking of doing 35% all around...would this be too much in our area? Another option was 50% sidesand 35% rear but some shops refuse to do 50% and idk how this would look exactly. What do you guys think?

I think you would be more than ok with 35%. The difference between 35 and 20 is huge. I had 20 all around on my old black A8L with tan leather for 3 yrs and never got stopped for them. I have 35 now on my S4 and am seriously considering replacing them with 20 again

I have my B6 registered in PA with 30% - have had them tints since first day I got the car new from the dealer lot...my first ever mod I did. I recently got pulled over in Newark, NJ by some cops. I had just gotten off the train from NY jumped in my car and was at a traffic light waiting for the red light to change when all of a sudden a cruiser with two cops pull up to my driver side and the cop in the passenger seat starts flashing his flash light in my car & at me - -next thing I know six cruisers show up from nowhere...my crime driving with tints now mind you 30% tints are legal in PA...case got dismissed after proving the facts to the judge but I was mad I had to waste all that time to go fight it....all in all just be careful with tints if you live in NJ or NY.

Its quite big I must agree but you must of been damn lucky not to get pulled over for so long.

I had 35 front and 20 rear on my A4 and got pulled over a few times. The problem with that was, each time was two different tickets because of the different shade of tint. I would say just do 35%, should be good enough and not too dark.

basically all depends on the officer. I personally dont think 35 is bad because I can see your face during light hours, but others just dont like tint at all and will ticket for it. FYI -in NY tint is illegal no matter what %

Try telling that to the Staties at the NJ/PA border. They see me face and still pull me over... for nothing but tint. Sick of giving them easy money because i'm stereotyped with the rest of the new douche euro kids. Same cop left me and less than a mile up the road had a slammed MKV pulled over who had tint and no front plate... hehe.

Then what's the meter that the cops slap on you window for?

I guess I've gotten lucky I constantly go to PA and have never gotten pulled over. Lucky I guess. It really comes down to what you wanna risk or tolerate I suppose. It's a $60 ticket (per window if you get a real d***) for equipment with no points. It's the constant harassment I'd rather not deal with

The meter is to determine amount of light passing thru windows. Past rule was 70% of light had to pass thru to be legal. Most have gotten rid of the meter. $60- you got it good, in my area its $110+ for a tint violation.

Basically what it all comes down to is the officer. We all know what to expect when you get the tint in the first place so its a crap shoot on whether or not you ever get stopped for it. I know many that havent and see that many have. And also remember when you get tint, if you have a vehicle with black interior, that 35% will look like 20%.

Sad but true.... Current NYS Tint Law is 70% front side/rear side and there is no limit for the rear window.

Unfortunately 70% tint is factory tint (clear) on most vehicles so 70% ultimately means, no tint is allowed on any window except for the rear window.

What doesn't make any sense to me is that a lot of vehicles come from the factory with the rear side/rear back windows already tinted 25%-35% but nobody really gets bothered unless they have the front windows tinted.

I live in a very small college town (3500 Full Time Residents / 2500 College Students) and I have been pulled over 3 times for tint and 2 times for no front plate all with in a 2 week period. Needless to say, I put my front plate back on and removed the tint from the front windows.

The police in my town have very little to "protect and serve" when college is not in session, so they prey on the local people to make up for college students not being around.

I have a friend who is works in the NYPD and he has told me that 90% of the cars he pulls over in the city either have window tint and/or have 12000K HID kits . Out of that 90%, about 75% of them have suspended licenses, a shitload of unpaid parking tickets, drugs/alcohol or warrants.

So pretty much, it's a hit or miss thing. Like most have already said, it all depends on the officer.

BTW, I have no tint on my Audi because I really don't want to be bothered by the local police.

ugh man, I live in Freehold/Englishtown and I have a '12 audi a4 premium plus brilliant black/black interior that I;ve been wanting to tint so bad. But i hear so many stories of how bad cops are in my area and it is discouraging me from getting them.

I was thinking about 15% rear and 35% front side windows though? To kind of take on the appearance of having no front side tints...or just not as noticeable tints. Anyone have darker rear/lighter tint front side and have less problems?

I had the tint on my old, long gone, vehicles dating back to 1995. I put them on my current vehicles (2 cars, 1 truck) only days after I 1st bought them. No problems so far.

I'm at exit 7 NJTPK. But I'm always driving up in Central & N. Jersey: Red bank, Brunswick, Elizabeth, Linden, Morristown, Hoboken, North Bergen, Wayne, etc, etc....

Used to always do 15-20% then on my last car (06 Acura RL) got pulled over 2x in 8 months and my car before (04 350Z) got pulled over once with 15% in 3 years. With my current toy (11 S4) i did 35% all the way around and 50% on the entire front windshield. I have not been pulled over yet and seen by many a cop.

I have to agree that I've had days that I thought 35% was too light. And then with a quick second thought; I'm good with the 35's for now. But, I will say that if I move down south or out west I most certainly will go darker.

All my cars since 1999-present were tinted very dark and never got pulled over for tints. My 91 eclipse had 30%, 91 galant had 20% and now the S4 has 5%. Drove the eclipse for 4 years, the galant for 5 years and the audi for 2 years now without any problems. I do go to jersey quite often and pretty much all over NYC and tri-state area.

A very good friend of mine does tints for a local garage that sells aftermarket accessories and he told me that most of the time customers come in to remove tints that are fairly light from 35%-50%. Very seldom someone comes in to remove a dark tint.

I live and drive in the same area (NY/NJ/NYC) and I have 35% all around on my Audi and 20% on my 4Runner since I got it in 2004. I have never once been pulled over in either vehicle, for tint or any other reason. Maybe I'm lucky....I don't know.
