I'm in half winter mode....winter wheels+tires installed yesterday, roof rack to be installed hopefully this weekend.

Right now I have 3 sets of wheels, 2 summers and a winter. The winter tires are currently on the peelers which are in great shape, the lm reps have summers on them and are also in great shape. My thought was to switch tires.

rock my bc forged in summer, and then my lm reps in winter (giving my peelers a permanent home on the stand)

Just curious as to what others would do. Didn't know if someone had insight like "don't use the lm reps as the mesh design will clog up with snow" or something silly like that.

Ill be in winter mode soon, my rack/box will go up as well! ill be sure to post some pics on whatever i end up doing

I'm running 18" RS4 reps with Michelin PA4s. It handles like a beast in the snow.

The Audi, on Tire-Rack black wheels of doom, and Blizzak WS70 225/45 18. In retrospect, I should have just bought some used Audi rims, but the TireRack jobbies were cheap. And I like black rims, so hey, it's got that.

I wouldn't recommend going 225 either; damn narrow for this car.

And then on the street, the beater, for when the weather is really gnarly :P

WRX is on stock rims painted black, 16" Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice. To me, having driven that car for 135k miles, I find it much easier to place/drive in the winter, given its size. The AWD systems are so violently different, that it's really a totally different experience, one car from another.

I had a 2003 WRX and then a 2004 STi before getting into my last S4. I actually preferred the snow performance of both Subarus over that of the Audi.

I'd tend to agree. The Subaru's system, at least mine (and yours) were/are dead simple: There's no magical computer gizmos whirring about, determining the fate of each tire. It's a simple, boring diff in the center. There's something to be said for that in reality, when the rubber meats the road.

The Audi center diff is completely passive (no computer). A non sports diff s4 would have essentially the same awd system as a run of the mill Subaru in terms of architecture.

STi's have really complex center diffs with a fancy IMU.

Fair enough, you're right. It probably just boils down, for me, to size (WRX being a big chunk smaller) and familiarity.

How do the 225s handle on the Audi in mild snow? Also what traits did you prefer of the subaru over the Audi?

They did fine this week; snow+ice+slush in Ohio, early mornings (unplowed/barely plowed highways). Good braking, which I find much more important, but to me they still feel "too small" for the car, when actually driving on non-snow conditions. The limits are a lot lower, shockingly enough.

My WRX weighs 800 pounds less; I think that's simply the biggest thing. The AWD systems are pretty damn similar (minus the lack of a sport-diff type part on the WRX), they're both manual, etc etc. It's just the damn weight; the WRX is immensely easier for me to place and feel on the road, given the size. The Audi is on a whole different world in terms of power (more + available much lower in the RPM range, obviously) and in refinement, but I'll be damned if I don't prefer driving the WRX more on "Bad" snow days.

Well, been out of winter season since last post and bringing this thread back to life.

My Pirelli Sottozero 240's are pretty bald and its time to switch it up. Must say they were excellent cold weather tires with very little noise. Not great in deep snow or ice but last winter I was really lucky in that we had a mild winter in Alberta. I'm thinking of going a bit toward better snow and ice traction over performance this time and looking for options. I've heard great things about Nokian, R2's in particular so for those that ran them how have they been? Noise, traction (dry and ice/snow), etc.

I see that Pirrelli has new Sottozero 3's that are very highly rated from Tire rack....anyone use these yet? Can't find them in 19 sizes that fit yet though...run my winters on stock rotors.
