    Interesting thread.

I'm an independant audi/vw mechanic. Most of the stuff I getis 96-07. I price by the job, not the hour. The bulk of my work is simple diagnostics and part swaps, but I also get plenty of valve jobs, timing belts, head gaskets, turbos, etc. For example, on a 2.7t I charge $500-$700 labor to swap in new turbos, $300-$500 for a clutch kit, depending on how much I like you, or if you have a vagina. I can do 1.8t TB jobs in 2 hours (not rushing) and I can have a 2.7t engine out of the car in a little under 3 hours. I like to calculate my hourly, and it's usually between $50 and $100.

    I'm ok with this.

Dayam....if I had a local place that could crank out my TB job in 2-3 hours, I'd pay just so I didn't have to waste an entire day on a weekend dealing with it. :)

    Kudos.

    Best,

It's 2011 who still charges by the hour, beside the steelership. In this day and time if a mechanic can't quot me a price (give or take $50- $80). I'm gone...

Actually that is common practice in many shops and is fairly normal. The reasoning behind this is that when you bring your own parts, the shop makes no markup on them, yet his labor cost is calculated in reference to how much he can make on the parts (normally approx 20%). Reason 2 is that 9 out of 10 times, poeple who bring in their own parts know f*uckall about cars and bring in the wrong parts, because they didnt know what was broken in the first place, or bring in parts for the wrong vehicle!! This happens all the time at our shop. This costs mucho down time in the shop, meaning lost money. Its only normal that some shops charge this down time potential and loss of markup via a labor augmentation system.

I mean seriously, when you go to the restaurant, do you bring your own chicken?? And when you call the plumber to fix your water leak, do you present him with your own piping ?? And when you call a construction company for a roof re-shingling, do you tell him you'll be getting your own shingles?? Get my drift?
