Any before and after pics of caliper shaving? How much can safely be removed?

helping a friend install some new wheels but the spoke design and the offset makes clearing the stock beefy calipers a little tricky. Thinking about trying to grind the calipers down a bit to minimize the spacer size needed to keep the wheels from poking out as little as possible. Does anyone know how much material can be safely removed from the caliper? Or have any picture showing the before and after to get a better idea of how much can be taken off without running into trouble, if any.

I shaved about 3mm off of mine. The HP2 calipers are pretty meaty. Been running mine shaved for about 2 months now, no problems at all.

I removed a good 3-5mm from mine, just trial and error with an angle grinder and belt sander, and painted them with some good ceramic caliper paint.

Keep in mind if the pads are worn now when they are replaced the calipers will stick out more and if you dont account for that now you will run into problems when the time comes.

ill try to snap some pics later

I took mine down almost to the point where you go through the thick outer lip on the caliper. I only did this in the middle of the caliper, but was able to fit my RS4 reps (OE wheels) without spacers with room to spare. My brake pads have a lot of meat also.

Thank you for the help so far! Does anyone have any pics? It might help to see where people stopped, as it might help show some kind of visual reference point. OR, and i know this is equally asking alot haha, but if someone could measure their shaved caliper to tell me the total width that would help too! Example: if the stock were say 78 mm wide, and someone who shaved theirs (without issue) was now 74mm wide, it would make it so i could keep measuring to ensure i didn't go too deep. But maybe i am just totally over thinking this haha. I just dont want to take too much off then end up being the reason my friend ends up getting new calipers haha

Are there any downsides to doing this?

I am not sure on the specific brand/style, but they have a pretty good lip on them which makes the spokes sit a little deeper, but they are not the factory rims.

If we were putting the factory rims on with the stock brakes and having issues, then we would be doing something majorly wrong haha

Either get hubcentric spacers or buy wheels that fit.

Yea, it's pretty sad when OEM wheels don't fit. I best go spend 200 dollars in spacers and bolts or I could shave the 3mm off the calipers for free. I'll take the free option.
