4 Channel AMP to 1 Sub

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
i have a 4 channel amp that im currently running bridged to both my type s dual coil subs. Now im wondering if i can somehow wire that amp to a single type s?

    if how?

    Thanks

You could bridge the amp and run the VC's in parallel, as long as the VC's are 4 ohms. Most amps won't do 2 ohms bridged. It's not the best way, but if you can get the subwoofer signal to be mono, it should be fine.

from what i know they are dual 4-ohm voice coils or thats what the internet tells me. I know they are 4-ohm subs since it is in-printed on the back of the housing. So what you are saying is to connect my 4 wires directly to the sub running them at 2 ohm each?

You set it up like you've drawn, but each side is 4 ohms. Make sure the circuits are separated. You can verify the impedance with a multimeter (it should read about 3.8 ohms resistance across each coil).

So you want me to check both i have drawn for impedance?

Also the amp has hi pass, Low pass, and bassboost controlling for front and rear, do I need to adjust them exactly the same?

Yes, check across each subwoofer coil for resistance (that's all you can measure with a multimeter), or post the markings on the label and maybe it says.

Yes, you would want to have everything adjusted exactly the same, because you don't want a difference in signals fighting against each other. Best to get a real sub amp though.

You have your multimeter on the 2kohm setting, and you're measuring 1000 ohms. You might have it connected to two different coils rather than across one. Anyway, the label says 4ohms + 4ohms so it's a dual 4 ohm, and it will work. Give it a shot.

so try for resistance again? i know the sub is working. So this is OK?

Yes, put your multimeter on the 200 ohm setting and just try different connections until you get about 3.8 ohms.

i hooked up one side and measured it on the other sides where there is no cables and it showed me 3.8, now then i disconnected the one side and connected the other with the different cables and checked again and it gives me 3.8

now what i did before is i had all 4 hooked up and i got 8 something

is this correct, save to run?

yeah, if you had that wire connected and measured them in series, you'd get around 8.

Thank you for your help, I appreciate it!

My plan of purchasing a 2nd similar amp didn't work out, now I'm wondering what would be a good amp to run those with?

theres nothing wrong with the amp that you allready have you just have to make sure its set up correctly

you need to wire the amp so the front channels see a bridged 4 ohm load
you need to wire the amp so the rear channels see a bridged 4 ohm load

set the low pass filter to around 50-60hz and leave the bass bosst feature off completely

the really important bit with this is the gain setting
effectivly you are running each voice coil of the sub from a seperate part of the amp
so you now need to ensure both sides of the amp are putting out exactly the same power ...otherwise the sub will try and tear itself apart
as effectivly the two halves of the amp will be working against each other , when in truth they need to be working together

the way you do this is via a test tone and a multimeter
if you use a 40hz test tone which you should be able to download off the internet then measure the front end rear channel outputs and make them as equal as possible
